Astoria post office spared

From the Queens Chronicle:

The Grand Station post office in Astoria has been removed from the U.S. Postal Service's list of thousands of facilities that may be closed to save money, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan and Queens) announced Tuesday afternoon.

Area residents and elected officials had strongly objected to the possible closure, saying the Grand Station, located at 45-08 30 Ave., is heavily used and necessary to the community. They staged two rallies to save it since its possible closure was announced last summer.

It's kind of odd that the US Postal Service is not a government agency, yet politicians seem to be able to influence things.
When the government runs "private" companies it's called fascism. Think General motors.
The problem is that the government can create policy to favor one company over the other. Why do you think the Chevy Volt has a $7500 rebate paid for by the taxpayers of this country. Does for get a similar rebate for its F150?

Stories about the inefficiency and deficits of the former "Department of the Post Office" are so common, people just shrug. Until the 1930's, it was the practically the only physical presence of the federal government in many communities. No private company would touch it now if they have to live with government labor contracts in perpetuity.

You have a great perspective on history. Wish more people understood it the way you do.

A small little used p o is the least of that community's problems.

A piece of relatively low hanging fruit replete with nice photo ops.

Another postal facility a matter of blocks away.

If it was really important issue, they would have closed it and the locals could have picketed until they were blue in the face.

Only old people use the post office.
Ridiculous.

I wouldn't mind getting my junk mail every other day instead of daily. I get my real mail electronically anyway. It's not like the folk at the post office even know how to work or speak, so who needs them.

The problem is that the old want the Post Office near them. They go in just to buy stamps. Buy it online.

Too bad. The fat guy who works there most days is a real turd. I mean he is extremely rude most of the time. I would not be surprised if he "goes postal" at one of his customer one day. I don't go to this branch for this reason. I got sick of him. The jerk should be exterminated.
