Finally, some enforcement

MASPETH, NY (PIX11) -- The people of Maspeth wanted illegal trucks off their streets, and PIX 11 News got the attention of authorities.

Wednesday morning, a checkpoint of NYPD officers was set up on Flushing and Grand Avenues, snagging trucks longer than 53 feet, and issuing tickets to the drivers.

"It's amazing, we have been suffering for years and after your report, they are here to help us,” said Tony Nunnziato, the grateful owner of a flower shop on Flushing Avenue, yards away from the dragnet of big rigs.

"It's about time there’s some enforcement, these trucks are constant, "said Robert Holden, with the Juniper Park Civic Association.

Several dozen trucks were given citations throughout the morning. An NYPD spokesperson says they have given out more than a hundred citations on this stretch of roadway this year.

lol...no wonder truck traffic was slow on 78st in middle village yesterday. Mr Holden and Mr Mocker...please do a story about the mess on 78st between 69rd and upper Copper ave. On top of the 2 business that are a blight to the block we have a guy who parks his trucking rig on the sidewalk of upper copper ave. Kids use the rig to climb to the top of the building and graffiti on the upper building. The owners of the buildings don't care how it looks. I feel like i'm living in the bronx from the 70s. Please help.

Maspeth Mom says...

Thats great, but they should also have a police car on the corner of 59th Street and 56th Drive, then you will see how many trucks are turning onto 56 Drive and causing havoc and backups - people driving wrongway and in reverse to excape the backups - Eventually someone will kill a schoolkid and THEN we will have outrage and all the politicians here.THEN IT WILL TO LATE!!!!!

One day of summones is not going to help this situation.

In the evening and on weekends when you take the 69th Street exit west off the LIE and proceed down the ramp there is always a trailer truck or two parked illegally on the left hand shoulder.

The 104th precinct is a joke when traffic violations are concerned.

Uh...Nunziato's flower shop is on Grand Avenue not Flushing Avenue.

WELL WELL WELL, NICE TO SEE SOME POLICE PRECIENTS ACTUALY WORK. THERE HAS BEEN NO ENFORCEMENT IN WHITESTONE , ESPECIALLY ON 5TH AVENUE, EVEN AFTER A TRAILER ILLEGALY TURNED ONTO THE BLOCK AND DESTROYED A FIRE HYDRANT.

WAKE UP 109TH.

Drove on Grand Avenue this morning. I saw lots of illegally large trucks, but no police enforcement. Back to business as usual. Thanks 104.

The news got their dog and pony show. Story over.
Look at the bright side, air quality is up in Times Sq. Maybe the residents of Maspeth should catch a show.

Yes and they missed an opportunity for thousands more - enough to pay for a new precinct. Now they should foucus on 80 street where every single day hundreds of trucks roam onto "No trucks except local delivery" street. Enforcement is what gives the law teeth!

How about the latest "thing occurring in our back yards"?

It seems that 57th Ave is now home to mega large passenger buses. One such bus is consistently parked and is a cheap inter-city bus to Norfolk Va. It appears the Chinese bus Co has discovered free bus parking on these desolate stretches. Some of these buses are also used as overflow housing by Mexican migrant workers who bath and get serviced at a house next to Verizon Newtown van yard. It's expected that the outdoor food, bar and dance business from this house will be oversubscribed with the new park opening next door very soon! On dedication day Mayor Bloomberg should go to this green shingled dump and sample all of the "wares"!

The city could use this as a built in revenue stream. These trucks will still continue to drive there regardless of the tickets. The companies will just write the tickets off as a business expense.
