Presidents have regularly pardoned the Thanksgiving turkey since at least 1989, when George H.W. Bush established the tradition, and occasionally did so before. Of course, they've always ended up eating some other unlucky bird.

Actually, the first one was pardoned by Truman in 1947.
Actually, the Truman legend is unconfirmed. If it happened, the Truman Library can't find any supporting documentation.
