Bloomberg may close 25 firehouses next year

From the NY Post:

Up to 25 fire companies could be shuttered next year as City Hall cost cutters battle to extinguish the $5 billion hole burning through the municipal budget.

The closings are just one idea officials are weighing in the face of their yawning budget gap. Each ladder and engine-company shutdown would save about $1 million a year, sources said.

Another possible budget-slashing measure is lowering staffing on 60 engine companies from five firefighters to four.

City officials proposed slashing $16 million from this year's budget with engine-staffing cuts, but fire-union opposition scuttled the plan.

"It is expected that in the current financial climate, it will all be looked at again," an FDNY insider said.

Safety advocates are sounding alarms over the possibility of slashing fire companies and staffing.

"If this happens, it would be crazy," said Councilman James Vacca, chair of the Fire and Criminal Justice Committee.

"You can't put a price on a person's life. We proved by closing engine and ladder companies you are increasing response times. One minute, three minutes, five minute -- this means life and limb."

Too bad most firemen live on Long Island and can't vote against Bloomberg. So lets get out there out make theirs and our voices heard. Frankly I'm sick and tired of voters excuses for not voting.

Good reason to vote him out!

Why doesnt Bloomburg cut some of the Fire Inspectors -those that go around to stores and make sure that there are no fire hazards. Let the fire fighters on their down time conduct these inspections (instead of going to Pioneer on Grand Avenue - spending 20 minutes flirting with the cashiers-while otheres wait in line)
WE all know that they spend alot of time doing nothing - that time could be spent productively.

An old rant from Oct. of last year in front of Engine 212 shuttered. E212 was the closest house and closed when we had the biggest fire after Sept. 11.
By the way this fire was convenient and fortuitous for the developer although originally blamed on a drunk homeless man.

Remember how the Queens Democratic Machine (and by extention, the weekly newspapers they control) turned their backs on you, your community, even made a joke of the Democratic Party of Kennedy and Roosevelt to back this pygmy.

Break their Monopoly Now!

Cops and firemen should live in the city like they used to.

Turn over public housing project to them.

I have a great idea to close the gap. Cut city government pay. Not the workers, people like city councel community boards, mayor aides etc. You know the people who just got really nice raises while everyone else is struggling to eat. I think 1/2 pay would still give them more than most of us earn and it could close the budget hole. And I think that should be done to both NY City and NY State. My 2 cents.

Makes sense...over develop the land, over populate the areas, don't build more schools for the new population, close hospitals to overcrowd the open ones even more, and now close firehouses.

Bloomberg doesn't want to help us...he wants to kill us!

Soon he'll be firing school employees, ticketing everyone for everything, limiting garbage pick-up, taking our land for more overdevelopment, and taking us more.

Soon...wait...did he already do that???

and people think Thompson is WORSE???

before we know it, we'll be relying on a volunteer fire department.

Another way to gut a community making it ripe for gentrification and over development.

If a building burns to the ground a demolition permit won't be necessary!

I guess closing hospitals doesn't kill poor people fast enough....eh Mayor Mike?
