LI legislator busted for bribe-taking

From the NY Post:

A Long Island legislator was busted for lying about contracts he awarded to a developer whose money he used to pay his mortgage and gambling debts, officials said yesterday.

Nassau County Legislator Roger Corbin, 62, filed false tax returns to hide that he accepted $226,000 from an unidentified developer who was awarded contracts for a federally-funded revitalization project in New Cassel, which is in Corbin's district, said U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell.

After receiving 81 checks made out to cash between 2005 and 2007, Corbin compounded his crime by telling federal agents he had given the money to someone who was purportedly paying workers at the construction sites.

But that man died in 2005, before 73 of the checks were received and deposited, Campbell said.
