Our official apple?

From the NY Times:

The apple of the Big Apple is almost nearly always portrayed as red (despite City Hall’s recent environmental aspirations).

But what if it were actually green?

A coalition of local environmental groups and a city councilman are pushing for a lopsided, mottled green apple to be the “official apple of New York.”

The apple in question is the Newtown Pippin, which originated in what is now Elmhurst, Queens, around 1720 and then ascended to become a trademark apple for Colonial America. It is believed to be one of the only — if not the only — apple that originated in the five boroughs of New York City. But the Newtown Pippin has long faded from local orchards (though it has remained a niche product in Virginia under the name Albermarle Pippin).

I vote for that no nutrition, inbred, waxy red apples from Washington state!

It may taste like shit but it looks so ruby red and delicious!

I wonder if this apple is available and suitable in size for planting in a back garden?

I was about to bite into a seemingly delicious looking apple I'd just bought from a street vendor near City Hall Park...when suddenly the visage of Bloomberg appeared upon its skin which instantly began forming wrinkles all over its surface.

No, I didn't hear Mike's voice nor am I related in any way to the "Maid of Orleans", nor did I consume a liquid lunch!

I tossed it immediately onto the ground but the squirrel at my feet refused to nibble at it.
The birds avoided it too.

What was once a magnificent juicy red orb became rotten to the core...
pretty much like our city after 8 years of Bloomberg.

Three more years of him would amount to the kiss of death for NYC!

Historic Note:

The Newtown pippen grew at an 18th century orchard on Queens Blvd in Elmhurst that is now the location of the First Presbyterian Church.

A few years ago, for their 350th Anniversary, they planted a sapling.

It is the first pippen tree in Elmhurst in generations.

Sounds like our City Council has too much free time on their hands!

Newtown Pippin's are great when you grow them in real soil. Sweet and almost bananna like tasting.

The Washington State apples suck because they are grown in soil thats just dosed with water and
ammonium nitrate. That like soil in the mid west was depeated ages ago

They are basically colored sour water bags like most the commercial grown potatoes and stuff.

I like the Newtown (Elmhust) aspect of the apples' origins but Bloomberg is suggesting it and maybe the ulterior motive he has by it will be detrimental to Elmhurst (Newtown.

Sad stuff when one become suspect of an apple.
