Ridgewood Theatre likely to be landmarked

From the NY Times:

The West Park Presbyterian Church on the Upper West Side, a Romanesque Revival edifice of red sandstone...took a major step Tuesday toward becoming a New York City landmark.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to schedule a public hearing for the church and for three other sites: the Fort Washington Presbyterian Church in Washington Heights, the Ridgewood Theater in Queens and the former headquarters of the Brooklyn Union Gas Company in Brooklyn Heights. The panel also agreed to hold a hearing on a proposal to create an Audubon Park Historic District in Washington Heights.

Amazing what a real estate bust can do for preservation...

Naw, the theater is to bolster the repuation of Jeff II who now will be around for a few decades (groan.)

The church got saved because it is in Manhattan.

Unlike the Astoria Presbyterian church where the Sacred Sites folks talked to the developers to pull the rug out from under the community (sounds like Astoria Village doesn't it?) this church is in the right neigborhood - one that has plenty of landmarks already. Surprise.

And we know that outer boroughs merely exist to fill in the application for grant funding, then the presevation groups spend 95% of their effort on Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn.

If this is how the landmark law is being applied, it should be overturned.

You cannot redline 90% of NYC and expect a public law to stay on the books.

YEAH....

BUT STILL NO CALENDARING A PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE LANDMARK WORTHY BROADWAY/FLUSHING HISTORIC DISTRICT DESPITE IT ALREADY BEING A NATIONAL AND STATE HISTORIC DISTRICT!

Oh we hear that some row houses
in Auburndale are to be possibly tossed out as a booby prize.

Thanks to LPC's Tierney/Betts team...
Mayor Bloomberg's favorite finger puppets!

Do you want to gamble on losing 2,000 votes from our area in your
3rd term run for office Mayor Mike?

Do the math then scratch your head a little!

Stop landmarking crap buildings! Nothing should have the right to remain forever. A neighborhood should reflect its residents which changes over time! Nobody owns a neighborhood forever. As time goes on, different people come and go. All these old geezers at the Landmark society need to find something else better to do.
