Proof that money talks

“As a woman, I am here to empower women who are victims of domestic violence, but I am also here to empower a man who has always stood by my side on the issue of domestic violence,” Martha Flores-Vazquez, director of Community Prevention Alternatives for Families in Crisis, said.

Vasquez, whose group received $37,500 through a City Council grant sponsored by Monserrate, claimed she had spoken Giraldo’s family after the arrest during Monday’s emotional rally. The family insisted the injuries were accidental, according to Vasquez.

“Hiram Monserrate has an innate sense of nonviolence,” Vasquez said. “His demeanor does not constitute violence. He is an advocate for women who are victims of domestic violence.”

Groups Weigh In On Monserrate Arrest

“This case is playing out as so many domestic violence cases do, the one charged with the crime says the stabbing was an accident and the person who was injured refuses to cooperate with prosecutors,” Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women in New York City, said. “Regardless of whether he ends up with a felony conviction or a misdemeanor, he is unfit to hold office.”

Martha Flores-Vazquez: Race trumps sexual abuse, let's protect Brother Monserrate. Damn shame.

At least someone from NOW has some intestinal fortitude to say something. Still waiting for a statement on OJ.

Vazquez you highlight an obvious Queens factoid: we live in our own little world out here where third stringer hacks set the agenda (build more!, multiculturalism!, diversity!, vibrant streets!), developers are all members of an official House of Lords, and its ok for a community, a shopping district, and entire boro to look increasing shoddy and shopworn with each passing year.

When it comes to money, its amazing who you choose to sleep with and who gets dissed, eh?

Sonia, you and NOW are unfit to discuss abuse of women.

When you had the gigantic opportunity of taking on William Jefferson Davis Clinton, you chose to take his money and inflict your own abuse on his many victims.

You were unconvincing then, and you are unconvincing now.

Whatever Monster Rat did, he can correctly claim inspiration that NOW will always protect and cover up for Democrat pols who abuse.

Do you work with battered women? Volunteer for groups fighting domestic violence? What have any of you ever done besides armchair quarterback?

Since you brought it up, Mr. Nut blower, show us your cards, smart ass! What's on your resume regarding domestic violence?

Just borrowing a page ("Step 2", below) from your short, simple book, WN.

Step 1: Act like I know everything about everything.
Step 2: Challenge credentials of any and all comers (without saying anything about my own qualifications).
Step 3: When the going gets tough, insult somebody's mama and/or girlfriend.

Dont worry Wingnut, when you are unemployed and your spouse is about to face the music for fraud, you lash out at just about everything.

Maybe this lady should let the judge and jury decide whether Mr. Monserrate is:"innately non-violent".

I wonder how many women have been injured or killed by charming men.

Remember John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer, performed at children's parties as a clown and was a very successful business executive.

Martha Florez-Vasquez is selling out women. Not only hispanic women who have suffered abuse, but all women by putting money before woemns safety.

Her organization should lose ALL funding for and domestic violence programs since she has no idea what domestic violence and abuse is.

Monserrat is an abuser and using abusive tactics. Hes a coward and whoever approves his position will be remembered and voted against come election day. Hope he goes to jail because he is a criminal and its about time abusers are treated that way!

I'm a Queens resident and an ardent feminist for many years. I'm disappointed but not surprised that Flores-Vazquez wants to protect Monserrate. Most of us are loathe to "bite the hand that feeds us."

What does surprise me is Malcolm Smith's support for Monserrate. Smith should wait until the facts are in before elevating this new state senator. Until then, Monserrate should not be seated!

From experience, women subjected to domestic violence tell the truth while getting emergency treatment. Then, because they feel they have no other options, they recant in order to keep a roof over their heads. Until women have access to safe havens and access to realistic job training this cycle of abuse will continue. Kudos to Ossorio for telling it like it is!

I think its quite sad how Martha Flores Vazquez is an advocate for women's rights when her own son was arrested for domestic violence back in 05'. she has no right to be the voice of women when her own son is an abuser!

also, Monserrat donated money to Martha Flores-Vazquez they have some type of money laundering scheme going of course shes not going to turn on him, theyve been doing this for years.
