Update on College Point's Schleicher Mansion

To whom this may concern,

I just thought I would give you an up date on the situation concerning "The Grand View Hotel".

Mr. Tony Avella will meet with us [today] at his District office. HPD has finally been involved, and gave the slumlord landlord a deadline... I cannot believe we are still homeless, but I know I will see the light at the end of the tunnel soon!! We are fighters we love our Mansion!! We filed to have it N.Y.C. landmarked & although this has made us suffer, far from what we ever believed... it has also made us stronger!!! Our story will be out this Thursday, in the Queens papers. If all goes well, we should be home by Christmas.

Pray for Us,

Tenants at Schleicher Mansion
Happy Holidays To You!!

Love how people who pay rent and own nothing can call something "OUR"

It's called feeling like part of a community, rather than being the absentee slumlord from Florida.

so one this old house is landmarked who pays to keep it in pristine condition?

sounds like people without any funds looking for a money grab. If they like the place so much make an offer to the owner and put your money where your mouth is.

Love how people can spend other people's money but wont reach in their own pockets.

"If they like the place so much make an offer to the owner and put your money where your mouth is."

The tenants of Stuy Town tried that, and if failed. They could not out-bid a developer.

This is to ''anonymous'' If you do not know the facts...do not assume...Because we ''The Tenant's''Have OFFERED THIS SLUMLORD TO BUY THIS PROPERTY''.And as far as the rent goes''I believe my rent is most likely higher than most of your morgages..&since you do not know us personally, how do you think that we do not own anything???Thank you to Queens Crapper, for saying what you said for us...and on that note...May all who read this ''Stay Blessed''We will take whatever measures we have to take''TO MAKE THIS OUR HOME''

ive seen the condition of the place you call home.. And I doubt you pay much rent for that place.

If you "own something" as you say why dont you live there instead of renting in a run down old house that looks like a crack den?

I will not go back&forth with you on this, but if you were to see the inside of my apartment...do not judge a book by its cover,as for my rent''believe me when i say it is truly a hefty amount''anyone who has an appreciation of the past,of a one of a kind, will truly understand why this poorly maintained Mansion should deserve the title of NYC LANDMARK STATUS''IT WAS BUILD IN 1853...THE INSIDE STRUCTURE IS TRULY AMAZING..College Point has lost sssooooooo many structures,we have Poppenhusen Institute'' The Churches, and i will do all i can to see this beautiful Mansion get the recognition it deserves...I am sorry you cannot see the beauty i see....

Take some pictures and send them to your friend Crapper. I am sure he will put them up for all to see the beauty you can only see.

Glad you agree it appears run down. Why dont you and your dedicated tenants take an afternoon and clean up the yard?

No one has yet to answer should this run down poorly maintained house be given landmark status - who would be responsible for its upkeep?

Would you be willing to double your rent to contribute to the - no doubt - high maintenance of a building that is over 150 years old?

he tenants of Stuy Town tried that, and if failed.

Stuy town?? that is a huge development in lower manhattan where a large portion of the tenants live at below market rates and dont even live there full time.

Not an apples to apples comparison with a run down 1850's boarding house in queens.

groovy rita --

are you paying market rate rents there?

We have a ''Vacate Order'' since July.9,2008,''We the tenants''when we lived there''always cleaned our yard''&did what had to be done to keep it clean, why are you so negative about this situation.....i wonder???

I can answer that: the slumlord owner who isn't keeping it up now, even before it's a landmark.

Next dumb question?

Why exactly do you think would cost more if it were a landmark? Only the exteriors are landmarked.

Queens Crapper said...

Here's a better one: why would someone be so adamantly against the landmarking of someone else's house? Hmmm?

Anonymous said...

GREAT QUESTION...MAYBE ITS SOMEONE WHO WAS MAKING PLANS TO ALTER IT FOR PROFITS!!

once a property is landmarked the owner cannot make changes without going throufh a long involved burdonsome process.

To burden this one landowner with added costs to maintain the property in land marked condition is unfair.

Maybe the neighors should all pitch in and buy it if they want it land marked so bad

Queens Crapper said...

Designation of a property grandfathers in its existing condition, it does not require you to return the property to its original condition. There would be no undue burden on the property owner.

"Maybe the neighors should all pitch in and buy it if they want it land marked so bad"

Who said she's selling it? Or do you know something we don't?

Anonymous said...

THIS WOULD NOT BE A BURDEN TO THIS SLUMLORD...IT WOULD BE MORE LIKE JUSTICE....BELIEVE ME,THE OLD WITCH IS LOADED...OWNS MANY OTHER PROPERTIES...IF YOU ASK ME..SHE FINALLY GOT A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT CARED ENOUGH TO FORCE HER TO TAKE CARE OF A LONG OVERDUE PROBLEM...THREE CHEERS FOR THESE TENANTS!!

Umm, sounds like a developer with tax breaks, the taxpayer funded machinery of city government at their disposal, publicly financed infrastructure to support their develment, etc etc

so why doesnt the media cover this outrage in the same breathless spirit they cover development projects?

WHERE IS THE PRESERVATION COMMUNITY? THIS IS CERTAINLY OF THE SAME LEVEL OF COLUMBUS CIRCLE 2 OR WHATEVER.

I WANT TO SEE WHAT HDC OR MAS IS ACTIVELY DOING.

they are doing shit, as usual.

Anonymous said...

Do you think stuff like this ever makes it in a Pratt or Hunter College study.

Fat chance.

Why doesn't the preservation community complain about this?

Because many of them are slum landlords making money off stuff like this.
