Piano factories to condos

From Curbed:

Not one, but two former piano factories in Queens are hitting the market as condos. One is the old, landmark Sohmer Piano Factory. The other is the former Steinway & Sons plant. There are a couple of interesting things about them. One is that the developer is Joseph Pistilli, some of whose work in Queens causes certain people to foam at the mouth like deranged and rabid Dobermans.

The [Steinway] building, though, has "garnered online criticism for its relatively low-end fixtures," which kind of messes with the image of a "Grand Manor," no?

The facade looks great, at least he hired an architect who designed a nice exterior. The error was selecting cheap Styrofoam rather than something durable like brick and stone to actually build it. The interior is different story.

I give it less than that before it reverts to eyesore status again.

You must be the typical Astoria, or should I say, Ditmars native that wears double knit suits, drives a souped up Mazda, goes to the Euro-trash clubs, wears shades at night, and has a trashy girlfriend that resembles the 'model's seen in the Scandels ads.

These buildings are horrible made worse by their association with the Steinway name. Converted factories in Broonklyn and the Bronx - built as residences or artists work spaces - are a hell of a lot more classy than this nightmare.

The building was falling apart before, and it looks nice now. But like a previous poster said, the inside is another story. Almost all the apartments are still for sale and its no wonder why. They are asking over $400K and everything is of the cheapest material. The kitchen cabinets are stock cabinets, the appliances are white builders grade, ie. the cheapest you can find, and there is no character whatsoever. From the pictures that I saw, the lobby looks nice...inviting and open. The apartments are a different story.

When that stucco starts to fade, get dirty, and chip off, the building will look real classy.

Well, classy enough for Astoria.

They will not notice it, or, if their face is pushed into it, will suggest you move if you don't like it.

pig with lipstick, pig with lipstick.... And only marginally more appealing than the Soviet retro-chic of the Eagle Building.

Wonder how long it will take to go into receivership, sold to the city and be converted into "affordable housing" for the "vibrant and diverse" masses?

Fucking Pistilli probably already got huge tax incentives to reskin this pile of shit.

I honestly believe the community would have been better off had Pathmark torn down this pile of crap and replaced it with a supermarket.

Try reaching for the toilet paper when sitting on the crapper! You have to have arms as long as a gorilla to reach. Every bathroom was set up this way. I can see that there was not much love or thought put into this building. I can only imagine what is beneath the walls and floors. Good luck to those blind enough to purchase.
