Forest Hills storefronts have LOTS of vacancies

From Forest Hills 72 -

Over the weekend, I'll try to do a count of vacant storefronts. Off the top of my head:

VitalDent
Games Workshop
Hassan Beauty Supply
Austin Fish Market
Mandees
Annie Sez
Daniella
Shoe Bar
Inside NYC
Dmitry (half)
Sorisi
Tasti Delight
Renegade Salon
Piccolo Mondo
Rouge
Viva Bimbi

These are signs that Forest Hills has fallen casualty to a bad economy.

Keep letting big box stores into queens and you'll have more of this. Add to it the huge rent hikes and you get a really bad situation all over NY.

Wait till they platform over Sunnyside Yards.

The interesting thing is many of the people making these choices in the community no longer shop there but do so out in the suburbs.

They dont care about the community outside of milking if for all they got.

Steinway Street is also going through a long decline, about 10 years ahead of Forest Hills.

Dont worry.

The stores that replace them are Diverse! Vibrant! Great Investment Opportunity!

So SOMEONE will be making money.

99 cent stores here we come - or stores with branches in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Corona.

I went to the Steinway Street Fair recently. What a dump!

Forest Hills is one of the few parts of Queens that has a small-town Main Street feeling about it. Shh, don't tell the LIC yuppies, they'll ruin it with luxury condos.

It's indeed vibrant, in the best meaning of the word, not "vibrant" like Corona or Main St, Flushing. You can find all kinds of stores within a 1 mile walk; it's a very walkable neighborhood.

It's basic economics -- supply and demand. The stores in Forest Hills are not meeting customer demands anad are closing. Whereas stores in places like Corona and Flushing are booming.

that is because the machine is bringing in people to Corona and Flushing and hoping the people in Forest Hills leave.

Yep!

Same along Northern Blv'd. in northeast Flushing.

Local Korean businesses are flipping over like flapjacks on a griddle.

One location has had (I think) about 7 different businesses fail in 3 years.

Then there's a recent for sale sign....something very new here.

Not exactly a harbinger of commercial (or economic)stability.

The long vacant site of the old Quartet Theater is finally opening as (we're told) a supermarket.

The original rental fee when Genovese Drugs closed was a whopping 60 grand a month!

No wonder there were no takers until now and I'm sure there was a drastic rent reduction.

That's it!

When Starbucks eventually closes (Did it ever open?) Melinda Katz is going to sell her house and move with her new offspring upstate near Albany where term limits aren't in effect yet!

You never know...maybe she and Hevesi might take up canoodling again and produce a real love child
not one out of a glass.

Flushing is an Asian colony concerned with serving strictly Asian customers.

That's why business is booming primarily offering cheap discount goods and little more!

There will be another change again in about 5 years.

P.S.
the "Young Team"(as in Ellen) of political youth volunteers were decked out in force in blazing red t-shirts at the Bland Housing project this past weekend.

Sounds a lot like C.M. Liu's youth volunteer group of yesteryear but wearing different color shirts.
