I was going to suggest that some community volunteers roll up their sleeves and apply a coat of paint, but it looks as though more than that is needed to repair this damage.

DOB asleep at Barclays Center

Their vision called for an edgy, urban design that would stand apart from the clamshell look of arenas elsewhere.

The weathered steel panels and swooping canopy of the Barclays Center, the new home for the Brooklyn Nets, have served notice that brawny, once-industrial Brooklyn is back in the big leagues.

But with innovation has also come headaches.

The fabricator for the 12,000 steel panels — no two alike — abruptly shut down midway through the job.

The panels have occasionally dripped rusty orange blossoms onto the sidewalk.

And lately, iron workers have replaced hundreds of bolts that anchor the panels to the building’s structure. Engineers determined that weaker ones were originally installed, raising concerns about the structure’s integrity.

The incorrect bolts were discovered only a month before the Barclays Center was scheduled to open on Sept. 28. The arena ultimately opened on time and it survived Hurricane Sandy’s winds a month later.

After examining every joint, engineers determined that only 8 percent of the 23,351 weaker bolts needed to be replaced.

But the issue has led to questions about communications between regulators and the arena’s developer, Forest City Ratner.

The New York City Buildings Department said its inspectors had not been told about the problem with the bolts.

“The department was not made aware of this issue,” said Anthony Sclafani, a Buildings Department spokesman. “We would expect to be notified in a case like this.”

Hey, that rust is supposed to be there!

The developer of East on East—the rusting steel-clad building on Jackson Avenue in Hunters Point—wants to clarify a few points raised by critics who don't like the modernist building inspired by painter Piet Mondrian and sculptor Richard Serra. Amol Sarva does not dispute that the building is rusting, but says that this is by design and any negative repercussions are simply signs of a work in progress.

"The complainers about rust on the sidewalk are wrong - the sidewalk is the pre-construction sidewalk and the finished facade system does incorporate a gutter system that catches all the runoff. Only the final sewer drain connection for that gutter is pending, which is why we haven't repaved yet.

Getting rusty in LIC

Hey Queens Crapper, have you seen the East of East building? its on 13-14 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City across the street from Manducatis.

Wow is that building a load of Crap, its a big pile of Rusted Crap and its been dripping rust all over the sidewalk staining the sidewalk and the rest of the facade with Rust!

I mean who in the right mind would purposely build a condo building and clad it with rusted metal, not to mention the tiny prison type windows?

This once was a condo that failed and is now finally open as a cheap rental building.

Look at the pics of the facade and the sidewalk, don't you love the rust stains all over, and what about that plywood for a fence door, and let's not forget its right next door to a taxi gas station.... Plus a major Eye Sore!!!

Even the website is crappy.
I would think that this building could win the Ugliest Building In Queens 2012!

Arverne eyesore

"Take a good look at this photo. These 3-family houses on Beach 65th Street in Arverne have been under construction since 2006, yet they're still not done, the yards are full of trash, and the balconies are rusted. The permits are expired. The sidewalk is still blocked off, and DOT permits are also likely expired. They took empty land and made it an eyesore. So much for the Rockaway revitalization." - anonymous
