Jamaica Estates squatters are finally out

From WPIX:

Ex-NYPD cop Winston Bailey and his family finally got the boot from the Jamaica Estates home where they’d been living for more than two years without paying rent.

...On Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, the clock finally struck midnight. Time ran out for the Baileys. A city marshal and five NYPD cops showed up to get them out. They were evicted.

Byrne is grateful, but .. there’s always a “but” with these people.

The Baileys went back to court the next day. And according to Byrne, civil court Judge Louis Vilella gave them one hour a day for a week to get the rest of their belongings out of Byrne's house.

Judge Vilella will consult with the judge handling the federal bankruptcy action to make sure he’s not missing anything. And then he’s due to issue a ruling on Feb. 29, presumably a final ruling.

Who's responsible for cleaning seized properties?

From Clean Up Jamaica Queens:

...the place has been sitting empty for awhile, with a "Marshal's Legal Possession" sign on the door, several Department of Sanitation violation notices (courtesy of yours truly) and a shit load of garbage in the front yard, down the basement stairs and on the porch. As usual, the garbage still stays and more gets added every day and again no one is doing anything about this and the place looks like shit and the community again as a whole suffers due to this bullshit and nonsense.

So is this and other places like this going to get cleaned-up or as usual will it just stay like this, get worse and continue the deterioration of Jamaica?

So, is the marshal supposed to clean it since it's in their possession? Hmm...

Squatters evicted from church

From WPIX:

A Queens church has evicted two women who were offered a temporary place to stay but never left.

Judy and Mary, who asked us not to use their last names, were offered a room in the basement of the Queensboro Hill Community Church in 2011. The pair had been roommates for years but were recently evicted from their apartment after Mary lost her job.

Church leaders said they felt for the women but after six months, they felt taken advantage of. They could no longer use the stage for performances and the women would use the heat in the winter. To make matters worse, anytime the Pastor would ask them to leave, they would makes excuses as to why they could not.

Last Friday, a court ordered the women be out. They promised PIX 11 they would be. But today, the women were still at the church and a city marshal arrived and evicted them.

Sanders wants to open airport parking lots to city marshals

From the Daily News:

A Queens councilman hoping to land cash for city coffers said the Port Authority won't lift a ban barring the city from towing parking scofflaws at the city's two major airports.

Councilman James Sanders Jr. said the city misses out on much-needed funds since marshals, who tow the worst parking offenders, aren't allowed in lots at Kennedy and LaGuardia.

That's 29,000 spots where scofflaws can park worry-free.

"I'm disappointed," said Sanders (D-Laurelton). "I always think that reasonable people should reason together. Both are reasonable, and both are stuck on their positions."

Sanders said he asked Port Authority officials on Feb. 22 to reconsider the ban. But the Port Authority made it clear that rescinding the restriction was "not a priority issue," he said.

Critics have long slammed the city for failing to tow cars with certain out-of-state license plates, noting the city loses out on millions in unpaid parking fines.

But they support the airport ban since it cuts down on traffic and security concerns.
