Generations of motorists in central Queens would scoff at the notion of “award” being used in the same sentence as Kew Gardens Interchange, but this is now true. Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Aug. 4 that the $937 million Kew Gardens Interchange reconstruction project that was completed by the State Department of Transportation last winter was recognized with an award at the 2023 America’s Transportation Awards competition.

The Kew Gardens Interchange project was named a winner of the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials region in the “Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Large Project” category. This year, 36 state transportation departments participated in the competition, nominating 81 total projects.

“The Department of Transportation’s Kew Gardens Interchange project was a massive undertaking that utilized innovation and technology to improve the transportation infrastructure in Queens, all while reducing bottlenecks and helping keep traffic moving,” Hochul said. “To be recognized on a national level for this work is a testament to our efforts to make the lives of New Yorkers better.”

The America’s Transportation Awards competition recognizes the projects and programs that make their communities better places to live, work and play. Now in its 16th year, the awards help to showcase why transportation infrastructure is so vital and, as the drivers who spent a good portion of their lives trapped in bottlenecks on the Interchange can attest, the reconstruction project that was nearly four decades in the making was indeed vital.

The award-winning project revamped one of the metropolitan area’s most heavily traveled corridors, creating faster travel times, safer merging and exiting, and more reliable connections for the hundreds of thousands of commuters, travelers, and local businesses who use it daily to reach JFK and LaGuardia airports and other key destinations throughout the region.

Do the people that give these awards out actually drive on the roads, or is it one of those things transportation alternative asswipes do using google earth, ya know "the satellite view looks good" so lets give 'em an award for it?

After all the work and money spent there is still no direct route to the Van Wyck Expressway Southbound to Kennedy Airport from the Grand Central Parkway Westbound. One still has to exit at 168th Street and take the Service Road to Main Street. Also, no direct connection from the Van Wyck Expressway Northbound to the Grand Central Parkway Eastbound. One still has to exit at Main Street and take the Service Road Past Utopia Parkway to enter the Grand Central.

Time to stop putting money into these projects and focus on local public transport and a proper train system.
The taxpayer is getting tired of subsidizing car totalitarian freeloaders.

Wow, this has to be a car totalitarians dream come true. Roads and traffic as far as the eye can see.
The real American dream.

Yes indeed. The Kew Gardens Interchange just makes motoring a really fine pleasure. I can't wait to get behind the wheel right now.

Wow, you’re so brave. A true American hero!

Yep, why not knock everything down, homes, schools, parks and hospitals just so you can drive your lump of scrap metal directly from one lane of concrete to another.

The arrogance of spoiled overprivileged car totalitarians is amazing.

Well said. So first we need to bring back stop, question and frisk so we can make the trains safe for the middle class and working-class people who live in the outer boroughs and make this city great. Let's lock up the animals that are running wild like that teen-ager who assaulted the family on vacation. We need to lock up fare beaters, free loaders and shoplifters too. This taxpayer is getting tired of all that too!

Finally it's done! And it's not bad, living right by it, it's made driving through a whole lot easier.

This is all Joe Biden's fault.

Another tax cut for the rich should send that thing back to the stone age.

I remember my grandfather telling me they gave him a new Model T when he came through Ellis Island.....Not

Interesting that the Transportation Alternatives weenies saw something different from the rest of us "Car Totalitarians". Bike Nazis only saw the unfinished portion of the Van Wyck and not the clear traffic on the re-engineered interchange. What can you do with such narrow minded asswipes?

Sure. We can agree on some things.

More like more free vacations, RV's and private jet flights to corporate Clarence Thomas should fix that.

@"subsidizing car totalitarian freeloaders" Really ???
Do you nuts understand we car owners pay taxes, fees, and tolls for the use, construction and repair of the roads ?
2 + 2 = 5 is your math not mine...

Missguided bike zealots making “institutionalized” claims about car totalitarian freeloaders is getting old. 99 percent of us prefer other ways to get to work and shop.

I get such a thrill right where the the Jackie Robinson splits off the GCP at the Kew Gardens Interchange. It's s-o-o-o smooth now motoring through the underpasses that I'm almost orgasmic. You all feel that too?

Less cars and the streets became filled with unregistered e-bikes and scooters.

Stop the bicycle crime! Out of control bicycles, e-bike and other vehicles run red lights, ride the wrong way and harass pedestrians without any constraints. Police have been told NOT to arrest them: It’s a “public health matter.” Arrest them, ticket them, whatever it takes. Bikes should be registered and licensed!

Top down George ?

Obviously you failed math in kindergarten and never continued with your studies. Fuel tax, registration fees and tolls are a drop in the ocean compared to the costs of road construction and repair.
Not to mention free car storage in a city with high property value.

Sure, they are a nuisance, but the vast majority of injuries and deaths on the road are caused by car totalitarians and tank sized SUV's.
Take them off the roads.

The truth is, we don't know how many"Crashes" involve bicycles, scooters or any other micromobility devices, because they aren't registered and can't be tracked, genius

@“ The truth is, we don't know how many"Crashes" involve bicycles,”

Sure we de. It’s all available in the NYC open data. The only catch is that you have to be able to read. That probably rules you out.
Sad…
