Nine families living in two family houses. A few of them living in the basements, which included the family that perished from the explosion and the inferno. While the block is a close knit community, these families could have lived in a safer home if the city didn’t have such an incremental “affordable housing” program for middle class and working poor families and built 75-80% of it for wealthier people. How many more citizens will have to risk their lives and livelihoods to find an affordable place to live? And how many homeowners can hang on to their properties with the massive taxes they pay compared to ones in wealthier enclaves that they have to rent out their basements to settle in their hometowns?

How many of them living in the house were illegals? The government does NOTHING to enforce zoning laws anymore. Everyone no matter how many water meters are on the side of a house just gets a pass. Nyc has really gone down the drain. Right now there is no way to turn it around due to the open border policies we have and the welfare handouts we give out.
Wealthier people donate money to politicians and to their campaigns to get what they want, like paying lower taxes and making sure middle-class and lower-middle class people do not live in their neighborhoods.
Poor people who have to work 2 or 3 jobs still cannot afford to pay the high taxes for their 1 or 2 family homes in the outer boroughs. That is why they have to rent out their basements and attics to earn extra income to pay for their high bills.
This has been going on for decades now. As long the politicians are being paid off by the wealthy to look the other way, NOTHING will change for the better.

What does "close knit community" mean? It means it's an ethnic enclave of people probably all related, all from the same region of whatever dump they left to infest America. They then transfer their lifestyle intact to America. It was probably started by somebody doing something really stupid or not understanding how things work. This is what happens when you invited endless numbers of low IQ peasants into your country. These fires are nearly always in buildings full of immigrants who don't understand that you can't string five extension cords together or use a charcoal grill indoors.
