Beware of the Bayside bike lane

From PIX11:

Parents in Bayside are concerned a bike line directly in front of their children's' school may be dangerous for their kids.

"What about the safety of the 500 kids who are dropped off and picked up everyday? Buses will have to park in the middle of the street. Someone will get hurt," said Edna Harris, a concerned grandmother of a PS 213 student.

Harris' grandson is one of 60 students living with autism who attend class at the school building.

"It's the only school that would have a bike lane in front of it in the City. It doesn't make sense to anyone," said Assemblywoman Nily Rozic.

The bike lane creates a 12-foot barrier between the bus and curb, said Councilmember Barry Grodenchik.

"That's a big distance for a kid," said Grodenchik.

Monica Morales failed to mention there has been a bike lane in front front of that school for a long time. You can see in the pictures its been covered over for the redo. Go to Google Maps and you can see it is clearly there, but in need of refreshed paint lines. The lane connects with a long path between alley pond park and Joe Michael's mile on the cross island. Buses have parked on the bike lane every school day and couldn't care less about cyclists. And they will once it's redone.

These idiotic politicians and reporter are only telling half the story. I've ridden this lane hundreds of times and it has been there and is part of a network of connected lanes. Really bad news reporting.

Parents are the absolute worst.
Especially Grecian Bayside parents.

"Really bad news reporting"

Of course, Pix has become a joke, a parody of televised journalism. Look at Mo mugging at the camera like a damn child next to that rightly angered citizen.

It looks like the bike lane is going from a normal separate lane to a hazardous partitioned lane like the ones in Manhattan with vehicles used as partitions, which have become extended sidewalks for selfish stupid pedestrians. This is going to make exiting the buses tricky for kids and cause traffic congestion. And there will be the occasional accident with reckless selfish drivers. The parents are in the right here.

The city doesn't give a damn, doesn't give a shit for residents. Just drop a bike lane and that's that because REBNY says it boosts overvalued rental speculation/fabrication. Now since de Faustio is re-elected and the hack dems remain in city council (except for 30, despite Crowley's bitching), they are now emboldened.

There are bike lanes in front of 2 schools on 80th St in Middle Village. Comes in handy, the parents use them to double park when picking up their children.

Take your bike lanes and shove it.
Wanna see bikers in snow, sleet and ice.

I don't see a problem. This is the crap every one voted (or didnt even bother voting) for. Four more years of this nonsense that everyone in this city now deserves.

Everyone treats elections in this city like a joke, and these are the real consequences.

People can ride bikes there whether or not there is a bike lane.
And, if there are no bikes there are still cars.

This is really the dumbest complaint.

"This is a City issue, no? why is a State pol chiming in?"

Because she's a resident of the area?

Meh. Local residents just protest at the next CB meeting, demand a DOT analysis, etc etc - delay and defer and make it expensive. Would be nice if they didn't have to hide behind lame "won't someone think of the children" pathetic excuses and just say - THIS IS NOT NEEDED HERE.

When a residents concern (s) make it all the way to TV people tend to pay attention and do something about it. Good job Monica !!

I've been running and biking on that bike lane for years. What's the big deal?

This is such bad reporting, and Queens Crap doesn't help itself by reposting it without an analysis. Do better.

PS 213 is in Assemblyman Braunstein's district, not Rozic.

According to you and your snowflake symphony.
Start paying bike registration taxes, insurance like the rest of the vehicles on the road.
Taxpayer money is being used for these stupid bike lanes to re-create some communist city in Asia.

The funniest part is that they think the school buses won't park on the bike lane and the children will be forced to board in the middle of the street. Like that would happen. The Google street view shows the school buses parked on the bike lane.

I've personally seen the buses parked on the bike lane and I'm the one who has to cycle in the middle of the street. This is the epitome of much ado about nothing with a big heap of lies by Silly Nilly, Barry and a reporter who deserves the journalism equivalent of a Razzie.

Can we talk about bike lanes? How about the one they foisted on Northern Blvd between Douglaston and Bayside? The City took out one lane from the westbound side for bicycles. There's 3 on the eastbound, 2 now on the westbound. Does it impact traffic? WHAT DO YOU THINK??? I travel this every day. I have yet to see a SINGLE bicyclist. Somebody do something!!

You can, but the phony snowflakes will start getting upset.
So you can bike westbound, but take the train eastbound.
As I said phony crap, they want people out of their cars in the DeBlasio led Banana Republic.
Is 26 degrees right now, so where are the bikers?
How about in the morning?
Will they be using their "priviledged" bike lanes?
This is what they call a clusterfuck or for you snowflakes a disastrously mishandled situation or undertaking.

Bike lanes are not the only problem with this story. The streets of Queens use to have little congestion/traffic but because of over development and illegal conversions we are reaping the problems. Nothing done now will prevent the traffic from becoming so bad unless new roads/trains are built. This is what you get when lobbyist control City Hall ! They (Real-estate Investors/Politicians) make the profits and the tax payer holds the bag to pay the new taxes !

If you dig deeper into this you'll probably find the problem is that the parents who drive 3 blocks to pick up their kids from school might have a harder time double parking if the separated bike lane goes in.

From the article it looks like it is going to be sidewalk-bike lane-parking lane-moving vehicle lane (like they have on Broadway and other avenues in Manhattan). This will remove one moving vehicle lane and parents too lazy to walk to school to pick up their child will have to triple park (possibly blocking a traffic lane) instead of double park.

parents too lazy

Yeah, that's it, the parents are lazy.
Is never your fault, is always someone else's fault.
So get this straight pal, ALL BIKERS NEED TO PAY INSURANCE, TOLLS, THEY NEED TO REGISTER THEIR BIKES just like all other drivers/vehicles on the road.
Most importantly, need to held accountable for no lights, no reflective clothing, no mirrors, no ignoring traffic signs, lights, otherwise they have no right to be on any public road.
