My niece's husband is one of the contractors working on this project - excavating the footings of the old bridge in preparation for demolition. He was telling me that the two ends of the main span have to be kept level within 1/8 inch or the whole thing risks crashing into the water below. They're using computer controlled hydraulic lifts to do the job, which will take over 12 hours.

Thanks, George for being a good historian. Most of us would not have been able to see this. These pictures bring back lots of memories and a little bit of nostalgia.

My wife who was born in Williamsburg and moved to maspeth in 69 (Spaldo, Pat (my wife's mom) who worked at stokes for 40 years) is sad about the bridge. She remembers coming home from Long Island beaches during the summer. She knew she was almost home when the reached the bridge...
