Rego Park Sears is closing

Forgotten-NY
From DNA Info:

The Rego Park Sears will close this spring after two decades in the neighborhood, the company announced.

The store at 9605 Queens Blvd., near the 63rd Drive subway station, was was deemed “unprofitable,” according to Sears Holdings, which also owns Kmart.

The Rego Park location, which has been one of the anchor stores at the Rego Center Mall since 1996, will be among 42 stores nationwide that will close this spring, the company said.

Sources said the Rego Park store will close for good sometime in April.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but have you ever tried to find someone for help there or check out? I would actively avoid it unless I had no other choice. But that location would make one hell of a Whole Foods!

But I always found help in the Lands End dept.

Can you say "Amazon"?

This is the future.

People are too lazy to get off their couch.

Drones will deliver everything...

They also own KMART, which is a block away in another mall on the Boulevard. I bet it wasn't profitable.

Whole foods ain't gonna work in that area. It's mostly elderly and middle class, they can't afford the marked up bullshit that chain sells. Expect a trader joe's.

Amazon is putting box stores out of business !

Douglaston Macy's is also closing.

Macys plans to close several hundred stores nationwide.

politicians think it is a great time to raise the cost of doing business in the city!!! more to come.

Sears was driven into the ground by a bunch of idiots at the helm. When they started a centralized checkout system in their stores ( one line to pay for all department purchases) customers stopped going to their stores. Who wants to wait in line for 20 minutes to pay for a screwdriver?

A BJ's might be good for that spot too.

Nobody wants to go to box retailers unless they have to.

Maybe the space at Sears can be turned into some outlets....Coach,Kate Spade, etc
Wonder what will become of Kmart in Middle Village?
Our area needs another food store. Maybe ShopRite??

BJs makes no sense there. There's Costco around the corner; two BJs nearby in Flushing and one in Middle Village; total waste. I like what the other commenter said about Whole Foods since it would be a completely new type of business for the area, and queens as a whole.

Yep. Is called the Trump curse.

The people that they hire have no idea what customer service is, have no incentive to sell anything, are annoyed if you dare to ask them a question.

They don't pretend to be polite to customers. No wonder the store is closing. Observe who is employed at Macy's and you will understand why their stores are closing. The employees have terrible attitude problems and chips on their shoulders. They do discriminate.

Any new employee who really sells and provides service to customers, is bullied out of a job. True story.

You also have to go after the demographics of Queens.

The 3rd world transients don't make upscale consumers, and the snowflakes earning six figures groan under a ton of debt, and a have lifestyle that squanders money on bullshit.

As long as Queens has this image, you will continue to see it evolve into skid row and in the "better communities" on the waterfront, fraternity row.

It's the internet (mostly Amazon). That is all. Not lazy people, not transients not anything else.

You can search for millions of products on Amazon, and they can have it to you the next day.

You don't have to waste money, waste gas, fight traffic, etc.

Hell, you can buy all of Macy's stuff online too. I've bought a lot of things at Macy's but I've never stepped into a store in years. Why waste my time in line or looking for things when I can do it on my phone commuting?

You do not understand. This is Queens. As long as you do not speak up, everything in this boro is run for the PARTY.

THEY bring in these people, THEY pander to these people, and THESE PEOPLE, in turn, vote the 'right' way. No sense of community, only to tribe.

Meh, nothing of value lost. Alexanders was better in its heyday. The other stores have better options as far as clothes and house-wares. You need tools or small appliances, order them online or go to Home Depot. I live down the way and never bothered with Sears again after two or three dismal visits. Poor selection, crap pricing.

Sears is an outmoded operation.
Best they return to their old catalogue days...updated to online purchasing!
Most bricks and mortar ratio will be dead soon.
Progress has made them unnecessary.
Amazon take the fret, hassle and elevated blood pressure put of shopping.

In a boro full of ethnic neighborhoods, the tribe is the community.

Screw Amazon with their shipping and robot racket.
I like to shop in a store.
Unfortunately there are less and less stores to shop at.

One cannot compare apples to oranges.
With stores you have rent, salaries, Obamacare.
With Amazon you have warehouses in the middle of nowhere, robots, no care.
Amazon is like Google = instant gratification for anxiety driven a-holes.

Here's my prediction: WalMart is going to make another try for this mall after losing out to the space now occupied by Costco. Not my preference in a new tenant, but there are few major chains that could fill the space that are not already in the neighborhood.

A few years ago I ordered a high end washer-dryer combo. Sears delivered two dryers. It took about 15 phone calls and three visits to the store to straighten it our. NEVER AGAIN!

The existing space to very large. It most likely will be split up for multiple stores.

K-Mark bought SEARS years ago so they could kill it, and they did exactly that.
Now you cant even order burners for a simple old gas BBQ grill. The bastards scuttled all the parts departments so now you must go on line and hunt to find out almost EVERYTHING is no longer stocked.
I have a nice SEARS riding tractor/mower I can no longer get simple transmission and deck parts for thanks to K-Mart/Toro, same shit with great old diehard green Lawnboy

Sears was once an American institution, now murdered in my opinion and its a real shame.

Let's bring Walmart in. If not in Rego Park maybe in Middle Village when Kmart closes!
A plus would be a SuperWalmart. That would be a nice and help out many in the Maspeth/Middle Village area. Give Stop and Shop a run for its money. Their prices are much lower in the grocery aisles.

Bricks and mortar operations are all in danger. Their rent beats their sales.
Why subject yourself to going to Sears?
Chances are when you get there they will not have the stock item you want and then will direct you to their online order desk.
Dopes....I can do that from the comfort of my home.
Won't miss them of the congestion of Rego Park.

Anonymous said...

No please, let's not bring in any Wal Mart. It really screams low end retail and opens in neighborhoods that are incredibly generic and boring. Forest Hills and Rego Park are on the rise, we should be looking for something more sophisticated like Whole Foods or just split up the space and lease to smaller stores but Wal Mart would really bring the place down. They don't open up in good areas.

What's needed over there is actually a hospital.

Anonymous said...

Sears is going out of business real fast.
Thanks, Eddie Lampert!
Wake Julius Rosenwald from his grave!

Anonymous said...

No more hospitals. The workers are so sloppy they spread disease. Get surgery, go home.

Anonymous said...

I knew Sears would not last long when I waited for 1 hour for a online order pickup and they told me they cannot find it.

Sears April 1 rental property will be finished Owner of sears want double rent from Sears at Queens Blvd People think that Sears lost because of Amazon People shop from 50 states over internet help owners to keep good business free shipping no tax looking deals If government change every thing People back store People want to save as much can be possible that is the problem this days This is not about to be lazy how much you will spend money.

I worked there until about 2000. Back then, there was an electronics salesman who made 100K a year in commissions. He was the best qualifier I've ever met. Both Sears and the customers both did well by him. Those days are long, long gone.
