Big project to replace Flushing supermarket

From QNS.com:

The site of a former Met Food supermarket in Flushing at 41-62 Bowne St. is now unrecognizable with the 30-year-old supermarket demolished to make way for a new 14-story mixed use building.

The incoming structure is tentatively named the “Epic Tower” and will contain 84 residential units and two floors of retail or commercial space, one of which will contain a 11,400 square-foot school or daycare facility.

On-site parking will be provided in the form of a two-level underground parking garage planned to have around 90 spaces.

People gotta live somewhere...

I guess that idea of a replacement supermarket on the street level was just all talk.

Perhaps, people can live elsewhere. There are still plenty of buildings in Flushing that are empty, there is no need to house all of China in one block.

Overdevelopment in Flushing is passed the tipping point ! When is it going to stop ?

Anonymous said...

Downtown Flooshing....waddaya expect?
Another Asian development, of course. And one more less place to do marketing.

Anonymous said...

More of china coming soon....

A community ravaged.

There's a mega project right behind it.
Wait until the Met site developers hit the old covered stream bed lying beneath the surface.
CB7, of course, will rubber stamp their approval.
Follow the buck Chuck Apelian wants to remain its land use chair.
He will not vote "no".

has anyone seen what has happened to this neighborhood, one family homes bulldozed into mini apartment buildings......there is now traffic jams on Sanford ave from 164 street right down to collage point blvd......bring in a million people from china and dump them in flushing....I was I could leave.

Flushing is being called "Little Taipei".
Take a look at the real Taipei in Taiwan (formerly , Formosa).
It is built to maximum density.

Anonymous said...

Bulldozed one family homes?
The zoning allows it. It will all be razed for higher density projects.

Anonymous said...

Buyer beware!
Check the zoning map before you buy a nice cozy single family home and later discover that is located within an R4 zone.
Goodbye tranquility!

The only thing that will stop this is a Depression. I am praying for one. The monetary spigots need to be shut off already. This 'creditism' of the last 45 years has destroyed Flushing. :(

I like your (sic) "collage" point.
It's a crazy quilt collage of mismatched crap.
Even makes downtown Flooshing look good.
Time has passed it by. Time to move.
My house is for sale for anything I can get for it.
North Carolina, here we come!

Why don't Asians assimilate like the Italians, Irish, Germans, and Polish ?

They don't have to. Strength is in numbers.
I think they stopped having censuses after mainland China reached 1 billion souls.
That's with the one child policy. Now they changed it to two.
I guess they do multiply rather quickly. So they are running our of land.
Europe, US and Australia is also enjoying the population boom if you know what I mean.
I have nothing against them, but I can tell that they hate me and my race.

“What I like to call the ‘Renaissance of Flushing’ is happening right now,” Richard Siu, the chief investment officer of Flushing-based developer F&T Group, told The Real Deal.

Yeah. That's it.

Full sellout by the politicians lining their pockets, but soon they will be outsourced, because once the Asian's reach critical numbers they start running their own candidates for various offices and guess which way they'll vote?
Rightfully so I might add!
More power to them and send some of these jerks and their families into retirement.
Fuck them!

My ancestors didn't ask for handouts and didn't complain about not having "translators".....the immigrants of today only come here for American money, not to assimilate or be americans. They don't even want to become americans....there was a study done showing that less than half of immigrants who come into this country these days actually take their citizenship test. What a pathetic bunch of immigrants we take in!! They all deserve to be deported if they don't want to become citizens! Why don't all of them go home if they REFUSE to become citizens? My ancestors had pride in becoming citizens and back when my ancestors came over, welfare and social security was non existant!

You need to understand in the old days most immigrants came here with nothing.
How do you compare that to the so called immigrants/EB-5 visas who come here with megabucks, nothing to worry about and they don't need to assimilate as they look at this country as land only deal.

Have you been over there? I have. Shenzen industrial city, very dirty and polluted.
Beyond imagination. The only thing safe to eat was french fries from McDonald's.
Super congested also. Now it makes sense?

A lot of this "buying with cash " is a myth. A few might.
A real estate broker who was dealing with a Chinese home buyer conveyed the following story to me.
Buyer said that if seller lowered the price $20,000 they would pay "all cash".
Broker responded, "Fine! The closing is tomorrow."
Buyer retorted,"Need two weeks...no good".
Bullshit!! There was never any cash. The buyer needed time to shop for a mortgage!
He was using the cash ploy to rape the seller.

Time moves forward not backward.
Flushing's time has passed. Flooshing has been reborn into an extremely densely built, heavily populated Chinese satellite.
Stop crying in your beers and move, before your time of opportunity to do so has also passed.
Olde Tyme Flushing was, in fact, a myth only to be found in storybooks.
We look at old photos of it and it all seems so quaint.
It was full of oppression and bigotry from the get go. It was all just glossed over.
When an elite Euro White ethnic group ran things in Olde Flushing, that was OK. They hated the Irish, Italians, Jews, etc.

How come some of the foremost real eatate developers in the city: Related Companies,Extell, Rockrose Development, and Forest City Ratner don't have large projects being built in parts of Flushing? Who do you have to bribe to get your foot in the door, the chinese mafia??

Why don't Asians assimilate like the Italians, Irish, Germans, and Polish ?
----------------------

Many reasons. Mostly, it boils down to 'because they dont have to'

The old italians/irish/etc were coming over with empty pockets, starving to death. The Asians come over with mystery money to buy land the minute they get off the plane. They aren't desperate enough, and dont need to try to fit in to survive.

The internet and cell phones means they can have careers and contact with their family and others like them, without having to learn to communicate in the local language.

There are so many social programs now for immigrants, there no longer face the 'get a job or starve' desperation that made so many before them learn to assimilate. Why learn the english language or american customs when you get your housing, food, cellphone for free, watch Chinese TV, read chinese newspapers, go on chinese websites, and get a job (maybe) in a chinese company on american soil (the company also gets its own benefits as well, but thats another debate). Hell, you can even vote in chinese and insist your kids be taught in chinese in public schools.

The Asians are assimilating. The old people might not be, but their grandchildren are going to the same schools as every other kid, speaking the same language, watching the same TV shows and playing the same video games.

2nd/3rd generation Asians, even ones growing up in communities like Flushing, are assimilating.

>EB-5 visas who come here with megabucks

I love how one commenter will complain that all these new immigrants are coming in dirt poor and leeching welfare, while another commentator will complain that new immigrants are coming in too rich and buying everything and driving the real estate prices up. They just can't win with some of you.

Anonymous said...

No is not. Lot of cash buying going on, including apartment buildings.

What you are describing is the number of tricks being employed by the buyers.
The one you have mentioned is one of them.

Anonymous said...

"The Asians are assimilating."
"They just can't win with some of you."

You really must be stupid or a journalist.
Flushing and Bayside have dirt poor immigrants coming in?
Building McMansions? Or buying houses?

Provide some stats, because what you wrote is simply not true.
Your bosses must know once they have a real opponent they'll be voted out pronto.

"Why don't Asians assimilate like the Italians, Irish, Germans, and Polish ?"

Today's immigrants are assimilating faster than earlier European immigrants. I remember when a council member tried to pass an english only law, only to find that there was already a state law that was passed in the early 1900s because the European immigrants at the time weren't assimilating.

Today, in general, by the second generation, many of the children are going to specialized high schools, like Stuyvesant and Bronx Science, going to college (many ivy league) and becoming professionals. Don't believe me? Just look at the enrollments at the specialized high schools and ivy league schools.

You can make all the racist comments you want, but you are not allowed to make up facts.

Get off your high horse. You just made up a lot of "facts".
The world is a much different place today than it was in the 1900s.
Strength is in numbers, what you are witnessing is an invasion.
World wide! With loads of cash, visas. Ever traveled to China? Try it.
See how much it costs.

Cash buying is rare. I'm in the real estate business for fifteen years. You, obviously are not.
A lot of xenophobics slam Asians for cash buying. It is , indeed, mostly a myth.
They used to say the same about Italian mobsters who dumped bags of cash for property purchases.
Then, if that failed, they made them an "offer they couldn't refuse".
Grow up, you bigot!

Really? The agents all coming by (most of them trespassing) promising all cash to the homeowners.
The flyers are all over the nabes promising all cash paid for houses.
So what the hell are u talking about?
Clueless jerk.

Get over it!
For thirty years their have been complainers about Flushing becoming Flooshing.
You had 30 years to move. Once a Chinatown, always a Chinatown.
And this is a Chinatown, for keeps!
Now your property is worth less, unless you have a one family house located in an R6 zone.
Then an outhouse is worth a million bucks!
Cut your loses or reap your profits, then run!
If you need tranquility, things are getting noises here each day.
"Vibrant, and bustling" is the selling slogan of the decade.

In the 1970s Flushing was rapidly becoming a sleepy seedy dump.
So now it's been vitalized, maybe not according to your taste. So move or learn Mandarin.
Forget Cantonese. That is looked down upon by upscale Chinese.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Flushing was blighted in the seventies.
The Asians saved Flushing from become like Jamaica.
If it comes to that, you can walk it's overcrowded, unsanitary streets
without fear of being caught in a drive by shooting.
I am thankful for what I've still got.
I can safely walk down Main Street at night. I cannot say the same for Archer Avenue.

Anonymous said...

Tear down that eyesore at the end of Main Street and be done with it already!
Preserve the historic parts though. WTF is its fourth owner doing with the Keith's?
He really bull crapped CB7 about restoring the lobby.
All we see is more graffiti on the roof indicating that he is not even sealing the building properly.
Demolition by neglect seems to be his MO.
Like to bet that the site will be flipped again? It's a Chinese owner. China is in financial doo doo.
So it will rot until it falls down on its own.
And CB7 , Peter Koo, Grace Meng and Toby Stavisky, couldn't care less.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm....at least Tommy Huang's cousin John Liu never got to be mayor.

It's not about empty buildings. China is parking its money in real estate.
Banks ain't paying shit interest. The stock market is shaky.
If I had a few million I'd be investing my money in good property that has a future.
Then my yearly earnings would be at least 6-10% instead of 1 1/2% .
Doesn't that make sense? America is one third down the toilet.
We will all be poor soon if we live long enough.

To the expert Realtor"

"How does activity in the commercial and residential markets in Flushing now compare to last year, the year before that and during the boom?
What I’m seeing for Flushing is that as dense as it already is, it’s getting denser. There’s a strong movement of owners and tenants from Chinatown. They’re feeling the pressure of increased rents and increased demand and values. In addition, those who own are getting tempted [to sell] by the record-breaking prices in the area. And owners and tenants alike are seeing better opportunities for the quality of living in Flushing than they are in Chinatown. The apartments are prettier, newer and more spacious. The rents are commensurate if not better than what they’re paying in Manhattan. There isn’t the crime that you might find in other areas. It is a tight-knit community, where a lot of them have invested in their homes, and so there’s a real standard to maintaining them. I think that’s going to continue to fuel that market. During the boom, the pricing for apartments was in the $400 to $500-a-foot range. Now it’s something like $600 to $700 a foot. The demand is getting stronger by the day. You don’t see a lot of foreclosures here because these people come in here and PAY CASH. They don’t overleverage. That also helps to maintain the stability of the area."

Yep. They have $30 Trillion in debt in case anybody does not know.
China is teetering on the verge of social unrest. Between the stock market meltdown, the cratering economy (which will invariably lead to massive job losses) Chinese policymakers are going to have their hands full explaining what went wrong to the country's 1.4 billion people.

Nonsense. The average Chinese or Korean Immigrant is middle class in their own countries. They wait for years to be able to immigrate. Why do you think there are these enclaves? Because they're working restaurant or factory jobs. Chinese and Koreans and especially the Chinese do not depend on welfare. Why do you think wherever the Chinese went like the South - Mississipi comes to mind, they typically opened up dry goods stores. They even married black women. Entrepreneurship is a cultural trait. They did so well in countries like Burma and Vietnam, in Burma they were persecuted and massacred in a bloody rampage. In Vietnam, after the communists took over, they kicked out the Chinese and now they've invited back to have them rebuild. The Koreans have a system where a group puts in their savings and one person can take out a loan to start a business. It's all self or communal dependency. Many work around the clock to put their kids through college. It's their kids they're making sacrifices for. Maybe your family lives on government handouts and union jobs. Apparently you're rather familiar with these programs,
