Apartment building to replace Flushing Burger King

From The Real Deal:

A 120-unit apartment building is being planned at 144-74 Northern Boulevard in Flushing, according to building permits filed Tuesday. The 14-story structure will measure a total of 59,000 square feet with 3,200 square feet of commercial space, according to the filing. In addition to ground-floor retail, plans call for a community facility on the second and third floors. There will be six apartments each on floors four through 12, and three apartments each on floors 13 and 14. The site — in a borough that’s seeing a rush of residential development — currently houses a 2,900-square-foot Burger King.

Awful. Flushing will be unlivable soon. Losing everything that made it Flushing.

Oh goody! This can only make the horrific traffic congestion in FRUSHING even better right? I don't get it, doesn't anyone care?

Anonymous said...

Of course they are! Where else are we going to house all of china and south america and mexico?

Anonymous said...

Wow, that will really do a lot to ease the congestion in the neighborhood.

Everything that made it Flushing in the 1960s, which is what you are mourning about, was gone ten years ago.
You know what they say about death and taxes....nobody can avoid either. RIP Ye Olde Flushing.
The horde has made it their colony. Learn to speak Mandarin so you know what's going on....or what's being said about the round eyes behind their backs.

120 new apartments means an additional 600 - 1200 new people - and their cars!!! Can that location really accommodate that?

Why are our pols intentionally turning Queens into a ghetto?

Anonymous said...

Here we go again....the promise of another community facility .....to placate it's somatized residents into believing that badly needed community centers will be available to all. Northern Blvd. will soon be enclose by walls of high rise. Lots of luck getting a bus.
Glad I live far enough east so as not to affect me. Only three blocks from the LIRR.

Anonymous said...

All of those one story buildings left on Northern will eventually be replaced by towers.

The Flushing Phantom said...

Has CB7 already approved it ? If not they will. Corruption runs deep at CB7.
Some of it is the product of ignorance of its members. Some of it appears to be through outright collusion.

Any underutilized property in Queens will be built to the max that zoning allows.
There is big profit in that for rapist developers. And , who you think are your elected representatives, actually work for these rapist developers. Does that sound too general? Your electeds get big bucks in campaign donations from them. So who do you think they really work for, you or their real estate boses?

Anonymous said...

Where is Peter Koo? Where is Toby Stavisky?
On some developer's pad. Then there is Paul Vallone, whose law firm lobbies for developers.

Where will all the elderly Korean people sit for hour after hour?

Nobody complained when Northern Blvd. was upzoned.....wasn't it in the 90s....when the old Amber Lantern restaurant, etc. .....was rezoned? Now the builders have carte blanche to ruin your neighborhoods. Commuting to work will become a nightmare.
And what does it cost for a monthly ticket on the LIRR....about $200+ ? Foreign interests have bought America. Your politicians were bought and paid for decades ago. The Democratic machine of Queens has to import their votes to stay in business.
Welcome to the Great Democratic Dictatorship of Queens whose candidates have no competition from any other political party.
That is unhealthy. Whether in the supermarket or the polling place....when you are offered limited products, life cannot be very good.
But you all go ahead and buy the same old brands without reading the small print on the package and you will continue to be screwed.

Will this be the product of a Chinese developer?

You can complain or you can move. There are no other options left now.

Developers are also eyeing the space now occupied by the YMCA on Northern and Bowne St, with plans to move the YMCA in the massive area now under construction at the former municipal parking lot.

'Losing everything that made it Flushing.'

Really? It's a f'ing Burger King! If Flushing, to you, is fast food joints and strip malls, move to Long Island! You will be very happy.

It only gets made into a ghetto when you make them have 'affordable' housing. That keeps out the people who don't want to live among the great unwashed. Let them sell the units at market/hyped up value.

Long live the poor doors!

Flushing is fast becoming a disgusting warehouse of Asians who have no intention of assimilating or taking on American customs. They still squat by the curb in their underwear smoking cigarettes, then toss their butts into peoples' gardens, lawns, the street, etc. They send their old women to raid peoples' recycling bins for bottles to return for the deposit. Well, they ain't gonna find any in my bin--I return my own bottles and get back my own deposits. They have turned upper Main Street into an absolutely revolting replica of some low class turd world open air market, featuring many illegal goods, rude pushy vermin disguised as people, impassable sidewalks and traffic brought to a trickle by double and triple parkers. Hey, you might be able to just stop your car wherever in the "old country", but here you need to find a legal parking space, you teeming lice. They are buying up houses and co-ops for cash, and thereby becoming favorites and favored of real estate agents. Where are they getting all this cash to buy houses with? Can't be anything legal. Meanwhile, regular ol' Caucasians who need mortgages are not getting a chance at buying homes.

These Asian turd-worlders have absolutely no appreciation for esthetics, for the beauty of the land itself. Everything must be covered by tall warehouses (otherwise known as chintzy-built hi-rise apartment buildings) returning the maximum amount of money per square inch. Never mind being able to see the sky once in a while. The buildings they put up are butt-ugly, totally utilitarian and do the Commies back in the Old Country right proud.

So this is the new Flushing. Just cover everything with hi-rise concrete and people who want to keep their ethnic bubble around them rather than become true Americans. It is amazing that the people who originally named Flushing could have been so prescient in their choice of names, 'cos it's going right down the tubes.

Will the scum Chinese ever tire of thrmselves?; of their own kind when their created Utopia is untenable? If they are so intent on the freedom and govt. welfare their bundlers are so crafty at getting for them, when will the overcrowded conditions become so bad, the schools so overcrowded, the #7 so over packed, the sheer loss of light to density, make them realize, the disaster of their ways. Main St. is like a scene out of Blade Runner. My animosity toward the Chinese is no longer veiled. In whatever legal way I can, I do as overtly as possibke to let them know that I regard them as vile interlopers that they are utterly despised. They may not care, but I was born in Flushing, and will not go quietly, in spite of fucking inept, corrupt political representation.

Anonymous said...

Anon No. 25:

So what?

Anonymous said...

It is the politicians that the Chinese have bought. These same politicians then sold you out.
Tommy Huang was the first to understand this. Buy the pols first. It was said that this convicted criminal was extremely tight with borough hall (Donald Manes) had a "back door" to city hall , and owned a few judges.

There is nothing particulary Asian in this approach to gaining power. Westerners have used this tactic for hundreds of years.

Note:
Remember, "The sun never sets on the British empire"....so they thought.
After the Dutch were driven out of New Amsterdam.....which Vlisingen (Flushing) was a part of....the British promptly colonized it for themselves.

So call the Taiwanese-Chinese or Fujianese-Chinese colonizers , if you wish but it looks like it is their turn now.

It is you voters that kept the Stavisky dynasty in power.....the Vallone dynasty....the Weprin dynasty...whose only interest was keeping their jobs and family reign. They sold you out first.

It was a Stavisky camp State Assemblyman, Morton Hillman who once said, in front of witnesses at his local Democratic club, "Thank God for the Asians. We did not want Flushing to become a south Jamaica".

So the Chinese were given their freedom to abuse the law in exchange for keeping Flushing from becoming a "Black" ghetto.
These pols were well paid off in Asian campaign contributions, legal and illegal.

So what shall the Chinese dynasty be called that now calls the shots in the downtown area?

Either you learn to bend like the willow or snap like a rigid oak in this windstorm.

Belated anger gets you nowhere. You should have directed it towards you crooked self serving politicians decades ago when it could have stemmed the tide of colonization.

Start voting smart and displace Paul,Vallone's foothold in northeast Queens. Otherwise this remaining refuge will be invaded by locusts.
Vallone supported the creation of a "Koreatown Mall" at "Leonard Square (a memorial park) by taking YOUR tax money to conduct a study for its feasibility.
This IS NOT even in his district. And you think that this shady pol represents you? He is a developers' lobbyist.

The area towards the LIE, south of Main Street is known as "Little Taipei" being mostly Taiwanese.
Goodbye Queensboro Hill. The Palace Diner has become another type of palace.

Anonymous said...

There is a height restriction on building further east on Northern Blvd. I'm not sure what cross street the cut off starts on.
In the Broadway, Auburndale area, you can only build three stories with a set back at the second story.
For the moment the horde of overdevelopment has been stopped.
But watch out for shady Democratic clubhouse controlled hack politicians like Paul Vallone.
He is not your friend. He is not even your representative. He represents his developer clients over your wishes.
Hey, you dummies elected him and he has betrayed you at least three or four times.
He is trying to cram a new high school into Bayside over the wishes of the community.
He tried to stick you with Korea Town Plaza at the Murray Hill shopping center.
Make sure that this is his last term in office, otherwise he will undermine your efforts to protect your quality of life and turn the northeast into a downtown Flushing. It might not happen all at once, but make no mistake about it, your property is underutilized and some fat cat developer is drooling with visions of developing it.
Flushing eroded gradually. The price of maintaining your peace and quiet is constant vigilance and electing a city council member who does not lobby for developers like Vallone's law firm. You homeowners must stand firm on this.
Nobody will protect your property like you will. Vote smart. Elect smart. Displace Paul Vallone, a traitor to his own neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

The vacuum between a lot of voters' ears have left a vacuum in the area for developers to move in on with great ease.
The remaining Flushing gentry is now expressing outrage at the loss of Olde Tyme Flushing.
To late folks. You kept on electing two faced crooks. Your community board is corrupt. It even drew the attention of the FBI recently.
How many knocks on your door are needed to make you realize there is a blaze in your hall.
Run out of the building. It is over. Grab what you can on the way out.

Anonymous said...

You have Peter Koo, representing who?
You have Grace Meng, the daughter of a convicted criminal, former assemblyman.
As soon as that toad Toby Stavisky retires, one way or another,
she will not be replaced by an "Occidental".
Is this not the American way?
A predominantly Chinese area is represented by Chinese.
A government, "of the people, by the people and for the people".
The people here being Chinese -Americans.

Anonymous said...

Why single out the Chinese for being "scum"?
Scum has no particular ethnicity. It is scum...period.
What about all of the political pond scum you elected over the years...the hand me downs in long established political families?
Did they represent you or their own self interests?
Therein lies the Kings and queens of scum!
I don't blame Chinese -Americans for taking advantage of a good sit u arion to better themselves.
Isn't that what your parents or grandparents did? Maybe tge good life you've enjoyed was their doing.
Wipe your tears and vote out ALL incumbents. They betrayed you for years.
You were too asleep to know it. Queens is such easy pickings for even a mediocre crook.

Anonymous said...

Complaining on a blog site is good. The local pols take note. Voting out these crooks is even better.
Dump Paul Valllone! He is a double agent. On one hand he claims to represent you. On the other hand he represents his developer clients, which are many. Who pays the bill? That is who a developers' lobbyist-lawyer-council member is most loyal to.
As soon as you wake up to this fact, you will learn to read between the lines of Don Paulo's bullshit!
Do your research now. Discover Vallone's real estate industry contributors before the next election cycle.
Make believe that you are researching the purchase of your next smart phone. Read carefully and do not be lazy and accept a political party's word for who will best represent you. Do not follow any newspaper's endorsement either.
Do your own consumer research. A politician is just another product that a political party is urging you to buy.
Once you buy a political, product there are no exchanges and no returns. You could wind up stuck with a lemon, as in Vallone's case.

There are lots of other properties along Northern that are under built.
Soon it will resemble Queens Blvd's. Canyon in shadow, where the zoning permits.
From the LIRR Broadway station it takes about twenty three minutes to reach Manhattan,
whereas it takes about a half hour on the Q28 or Q13 to reach the Main St. #7 station.
Nice....huh? What will be the increase in time when a few hundred more people crowd into these buses
from this new residential building?
Glad I live east of the swarm! Have a nice day. I'm sure that the Chinese who will be occupying the new building
will see this as paradise. They are used to living nose to ass in far worse conditions.
Eureka! Let's put in a bike lane to alleviate traffic congestion. LOL! Chinese love riding bikes.
Look at all of those chained to the median divided under the railroad trestle on Main Street.

Yes , Flushing Free Synagogue, by George. What a great respite among the fast track movement all around.
Twenty years ago I put in a request for evaluation for both the synagogue and Greek revival Windsor School next to it for exterior landmark status.

Result? Zilch!

Wait until the congregation vanishes in the future, then some enterprising Asian developer will build upon this extremely valuable underutilized plot of land.

Nobody but the LPC can guarantee that this will not happen. For the moment, all enjoy this, I believe it to be a Stanford White, building.
Some research regarding this needs to be done to verify it.

georgetheatheist said...

Yup, the Free Synagogue of Flushing designed by McKim, Mead, & White. Check that out here.

You know I always stand in front of that classically-designed synagogue and admire it's architectural sanity, peaceful and majestic repose amidst the newcomer lunacy that surrounds it. Sorry Rabbi Weisser: honesty is the best policy. BTW, how long is the Free Synagogue going to "hang onto" that expansive under-utilized parking lot, hmnn?

You can bet they never would accuse the inhabitants of Flushing of tax evasion, lol they would be tossed out of Office.

Up above someone is talking about Chinese Americans. Of all the Chinese in Flushing I will bet that only 30% have lived in America longer than 20 years. So they are correctly perceived as foreigners and colonizers. Quite often their public behavior is not American such as copious spitting on the sidewalks and occasional sidewalk butchery of animals. Americans object to the third world look that Flushing is taking on. My own take is that like most current immigrants they are only here for the money and have zero understanding of what America is all about. And have no desire to know American history and culture.
Lastly, one of the biggest Chinese scams is for a couple to do well here, have children. Then legally bring their parents over here to retire via SS disability benefits although they have never kicked in a dime. Plus the subsidized housing and free medical they will get without ever having paid US taxes

47 comments and no one mentioned this: Where are the jobs for these new residents? In a sane world, housing is created where there is robust economic growth. Are there "help wanted" signs up in Flushing in any language?

If not jobs, what sources of income will pay the rent?

Flushing was a mess long before the Asians started coming in big groups. I remember Flushing from the 1970s and it was a hellhole.

Queens Crapper said...

Actually, no it wasn't.

It seems the department of building and all the developers/senators etc.. are in on it since bigger property means more property taxes but at a cost to the people in the area with more people and more traffic etc...
Flushing looks like a warzone. A complete mess. they are even rebuilding 2 story homes into 6 story buildings and extending those said properties onto previous land that were used as yards so those new building look much bigger. looks horrible and almost every block is a mess.
There has got to be something we can do!
right now get address and complain to department of building to slow them down.

Anonymous said...

Cut the crap with all that "depressed area 1970s" bull shit.
Flushing was not that bad at all. Nobody is buying that malarkey anymore.

This cheap propaganda is a falsehood manufactured by local pols, the Flushing Chamber Pot of Commerce, Queens Brough Hall, various real estate developers, CB7, etc.
There was just a turnover in businesses started after the end of Ww II in the 70s. It aged owners were retiring.

This "Thank God for the Asians" mantra was started up,just to pump up the value of the real estate holders in the area...Schwartz, Mehran, Kent Realty. "White and Jewish" ? Perhaps. None of the olde "towne fathers" wanted Flushing's "Negroes" to "take over" their towne.

So the Asians were courted. Wasn't it Kent Realy who first ran ads attracting Taiwanese to Flushing so they could rent gouge them?
"Come to Flushing, the golden land". It is always easy to bilk some foreign Rube into paying above market rates.

I think that 149th Street is the cutoff point for high rise development.
In 1975....two years before I purchased my home in Broadway Flushing...I was told by a contact in the Dept. Of City Planning....to , "Buy east of 154th Street and north of Northern Blvd."
Tell me that city planning wasn't in on all this from the get go. And CB7 just rubber stamps their approval on all of this shit.....PROVIDED....developers do not build to the max in sacred Whitestone, Beechurst, Malba ,Robbinwood, north Flushing, etc.
Dump and contain the crap in the downtown sector.
The Chinese are used to living in worse shit in their homeland. Welcome to Avalon, the land of dreams.
Living nose to ass doesn't matter if you learn to like the smell of shit.

Anonymous said...

No NYC agency, DOB or city planning will slow them down. The area was upzoned over twenty years ago.
This might, in fact, be an as of right project which does not need a zoning variance.

Jerry Rotondi said...

Of course!
The more money that a developer makes the more he can afford to buy politicians with campaign contributions.
You ought to check out Melinda Katz's city council contributions online. Developers, developers, developers, galore!
Borough hall has traditionally supported development over neighborhood preservation.
Donald Manes was its king of kickbacks.

Peter Koo is tight with Michael Lee who is building Flushing Commons on Flushing's former muni lot #1.
Paul Vallone lobbies for developers. Toby Stavisky puts on a good show but takes money from developers.
Yawn....we could go on and on with the list.
Do your own research. You voted in these vipers and they have bitten you on your ass while your backs were turned.
And you think you have a say in government just because CB7 allows you three minutes of public speaking time?
They are crooks central. What you say gets recorded. What they vote on is purely advisory.
They often vote yes on most development projects, screaming "as of right" if anyone dares to accuse them of doing any wrong.
Then CB7 can claim that they represent the community's opinion and pass their approval onto borough hall.
Voila...then it's all a done deal....and Chuck Apelian retreats to his quiet cul de sac enclave across the street from...John Lui's residence.
Two shady neighbors withinn easy reach. "Can I borrow a cup of sugar from you, John?"
"Aren't you getting enough sugar already for a job well done?"
