Another hotel for downtown Jamaica

From DNA Info:

More hotel rooms may soon be coming to downtown Jamaica, which is already on its way to become the next lodging hub in Queens.

Pride Ventures recently filed an application with the Department of Buildings to construct a 283-room hotel at 149-03 Archer Ave., between 149th and 150th streets, as first reported by The Real Deal.

The 18-story lodging would be located only three blocks away from the Jamaica Long Island Rail Road and AirTrain station.

It would also be built nearly across the street from two other hotels — Marriott-brand Courtyard and Fairfield Inn and Suites — which are currently under construction at 147-43 Archer Ave.

Those hotels would be located in one 16-story building, and would contain a total of about 330 hotel rooms.

Who the hell wants to vacation in Jamaica? I wouldn't even want to vacation in nyc period if I was a tourist!

Hotels, hotels, hotels.
But who wants to stay there in a frontier town that is dangerous to walk around in after dark?
Tourism? My ass! Somebody is making money off of this.
And if the hotel doesn't get enough guests then it will become a homeless shelter.
Hotels are basically big box human storage units which can be used for a multitude of purposes.
Section 8 anyone?

Makes more sense than Fresh Meadows ... but, three hotels so close to each other? Ridiculous!!

Good news is another shitty auto body shop on Archer Avenue (another horrible stretch in Jamaica, Hillside & Jamaica Ave being the other shitty stretches) is being demolished. Bad news: a 283 room hotel is going up, just a block away from the already planned Marriot Courtyard and the Fairfield Inn & Suites. That now brings the total of new hotels being built in the downtown area to seven and that does not even count the hotels that have already been built and are operating.

Why so many hotels in Jamaica (and many other parts of Queens). I mean as far as Jamaica goes, no tourists (or anyone else for that matter) are flocking to this hell hole place of garbage, crap retail, crime and low-class folks, many from shelters and methadone clinics, plus the bottom of the barrel residents already here. So what is the purpose of this. Hell, LIC has many hotels and it is not like huge amounts of tourists are going there and that area is at least nice and does not have the “ghetto” flair.

With all the recent news of former hotels turning into homeless shelters (http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150203/jamaica/jamaica-hotel-becomes-latest-lodging-house-homeless-queens), the former Clarion Hotel in East Elmhurst the latest hotel being turned into a homeless shelter as I write this, people should worry that the real future of Jamaica will be homeless shelters with all the crap that those places bring to a community. Like we don’t have enough shit and crap people already in this community, we need to create human warehouses for homeless folks from other areas.

We do not need hotels, we need quality businesses and quality people and the whole damn area needs cleaned up. So it is great another eyesore auto body shop is gone, but I am not so sure that what is replacing it going to be the needed improvement for this community.

And the Mayor and the powers to be need to properly address the homeless situation as opposed to turning hotels into make shift homeless shelters. This is totally unfair to both communities and those who need housing.

Somewhere in the distant future, Jamaica will either be great and look nothing like it does not or it will be even worse than it is now, if you can imagine.

LOL! Boy I really feel sorry for all those German tourists off the Air train who are going to book a hotel in FUBU land, thinking that it must be similar to Manhattan! I guess they'll figure it out when the gunfire starts every night and they have to run for cover.

The name of the hotel should be called The Thuggery.

Simple answer. LIRR, subway and airport connections for business travelers. There is a huge market for hotels with proximity to airports for business travelers. Yes you are all right, this is not for tourism primarily (although it will be a slightly more affordable hotel for a family compared to midtown Manhattan). These are completely reasonable developments that the market is calling for. This is the type of development that you typically see in a downtown commercial district. Is it a perfect, livable community. Nothing is perfect but really guys, there are worse things being built in Queens. Take a breath.

TAKE A BREATH. Putting up 7 hotels in close proximity to each other in an area that right now does not have the demand for hotels and needs major improvements (and folks, Jamaica is not as crime ridden as expensive Bushwick or Bedstuy, far from it)is NOT reasonable development. Fix the area up first and IF there is a need for such hotels, then build them. This is putting the cart before the horse politics.

And show me the statistics for business travelers first before you shout out typical idiotic crap. Again, someone who must have a future in politics.

Why is everyone so opposed to building in Jamaica? I WELCOME people who have money, they won't be ripping off people on the streets or houses. I want to see my neighborhood flourish again! It's been ghettoized, and that didn't work, now let's get gentrified & take back our community!

I don't need to provide the stats JOE. The market has already made that determination. No one needs to provide that to a professional complainer. Great job by the way of complaining and getting nothing accomplished. No one is trully better than you.

Joe has gotten quite a bit accomplished. What the hell have you done to make things better?

These are NOT hotels !! These are HOMELESS SHELTERS period. I've stayed in a couple of these "hotels" in Jamaica.
Yes, you can rent a room as a "business traveller". However, all the rooms are filled with homeless families. And guess who's footing the bill ? DHS. You people have no idea whats going on !!

Yep, just like a true politician, do not need stats, do not need facts, just say it and it much be true. And explain to me how the market has made that determination of 7 hotels right near each other, just one example, enlighten me with your bullshit wisdom. By the way, always nice to hide behind Anonymous.

And to to the comment "Why is everyone so opposed to building in Jamaica". NO ONE is opposed to building, if it is done right and helps the community. But building 7 hotels in extremely close proximity makes no sense what-so-ever especially because there is no demand for hotels. There is demand for nice apartment buildings, demand for nice restaurants, demand for nice grocery stores, demand for nice retail. So one is opposed to responsible building, so I do not know where you ever got that information from.

Joe,

The market made the determination that 7 "hotels" and counting are needed because you and I will be paying for these homeless shelters. So there is a demand for these "hotels" because DHS will continue paying. As long as they continue paying, demand will continue to grow and sorry to say that it will be right here in Jamaica. You want nice apartment buildings, nice restaurants, nice grocery stores - then Jamaica is not your place. Jamaica is NOT Astoria, Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, or Park Slope.

Additionally, I am so tired of property owners and real estate agents trying to hype up Jamaica like its the next hot neighborhood. Who are they trying to fool ???!! In the digital age - its all about the buzz you can create !! Think about how retarded they sound - Jamaica is so hot that we are building new homeless shelters like crazy.

How absurd and retarded !! Especially media like DNAINFO.com who is paid by GJDC to put out these buzz articles about Jamaica.

Demand for the hotels? What are the occupancy rates for existing nearby hotels? Not a whole lot, judging by the on-going conversion of these hotels to homeless shelters.

Regarding the possibility that these could be successful - We know Jamaica. The naive tourist might book without checking out the neighborhood, but very shortly the hotels reviews will communicate the truth.

Market supply and demand do not apply to homeless shelters. There is an infinite demand for free (i.e. tax-payer paid) housing. The line to get free housing would stretch from Jamaica to Greenport. They are getting built knowing that the city will be the buyer of last resort.
