Grass and dirt doesn't get too hot. But we can't have grass and dirt, can we?

People are paying attention to what settlements the city makes for different claims.

What's the expectation of these people - that the city enclose and air condition the playgrounds?

Wear shoes. What sage advice! This is what passes for news?

Metal (and asphalt) gets hot in the sun. We've always known that. This was a problem when we were little kids too.

If anything, it should be less of an issue now, with so much more playground equipment made out of wood or plastic.

No, it's not news, it's a blog post.

But at least someone is willing to Please, think of the children!

OK, it was a news report. I couldn't get it to play at first. Point taken.

Jesus, 70 years ago when I played in the city parks I noticed that things got hot in the summer sun. I guess that I should have told someone instead of keeping it my secret. Running around the city -anywhere- without foot covering is an invitation to disaster. Good parenting is telling your kids to keep their shoes on when on the streets-Park or otherwise.

I think it's called "hot weather". We even had this back in 1965, when I was 4 years old, and running around NYC Parks, with all the other kids. H-O-T W-E-A-T-H-E-R. Next important article, please.

Chuck Schumer will hold an important press conference on Sunday warning NYC parents about the hidden danger of hot asphalt and playground surfaces.

More breaking news for NYC parents: leaving infants in hot cars can kill them; letting your toddler spend the day in the sun without sunscreen can result in serious sunburn; bleach and other household cleaners kept in unlocked cabinets are poisonous; Unattended children can drown in swimming pools....

anon -1 no, Schumer will try to make a federal case of it. Get the EPA involved, etc etc. And he will connect it to global warming!

Do kids wear sandals anymore? Do they still make them for boys?

This is quite a dumb story for dumb parents.

METAL swings and slides were the norm when I was a kid back in the '50s. My playground of choice back then was on 90th Street between 32nd Avenue and Northern Blvd. Still there, by the way!

YEAH... stuff got real hot, and the ground was concrete (real HARD); you learned HOW to play, and stay safe on your own.

I'm not saying my parents didn't care, but I was raised to be "street smart", and playgrounds were part of that training.

I used to leave the house after breakfast, grab my METAL skates, a ball and glove, and meet my friends. We played ALL DAY in the park and almost no one ever got hurt. If you did, well, you never made the same mistake twice....
