Hello,
Love your blog. It's wonderful to see someone keeping an eye on the borough. Here's a piece of crap from my neighborhood (Hollis) that drives me crazy. Some illegal "no parking" signs in front of unapproved gate. What drives me even more crazy is that, in the three years I've lived there, the gates haven't been open once. Ahhhh!!! Thanks for letting me vent.

There is no curb cut for a driveway, so what they are doing is illegal. Report to 311.
Absolutely report that to Dept. of Buildings. They will get a violation and be forced to take down the signs. You may have to put in several complaints but that's completely illegal. And feel free to park there.
The whole curb cut/parking issue is also a mess in LIC for a slightly different reason. Here there are curb cuts that are no longer used due to changes in building occupancy, but these legal curb cuts remain forever. How do you get rid of them?
The problem is that you will get a ticket for parking there even if the curb cut is illegal.
Question: how do you know if a gate or driveway is unapproved?
To Anon #4. If there is no garage or driveway on the side, check the DOB website for work orders for a curb cut . Chances are the curb cut is illegel, call it in and the owner can prove otherwise.
Did someone really suggest contacting the Dept. of Buildings? Good luck with that!
Question: if you're sure a curb cut is illegal, and you park in front of it anyway, is that actionable by the DoT for towing? (And please don't just say so, but cite a reference.)
It's NYPD that would tow it, and since they don't walk around with DOB plans in their back pockets, if the owner calls and complains, they will ticket and possibly tow. Then it would be on the car owner to prove that the curb cut/driveway was illegal.
Does the DOT regulate curb cuts? Of course NYPD does the enforcement.
DOB authorizes curb cuts. If you want a curb cut, you apply to DOB.
Here you go. Curb Cut Permit
Does anyone here know if it is legal for a house to have 2 driveways? In Richmondhill on 116 st south of Jamaica Ave, across from bank is a 2 or 3 family house, not on a corner with 2 driveways.
On 117 st and 89 ave is a corner house with 2 driveway, one was put in just last year.
Put the address into the DOB website and it shows any permits filed for.
That really does look ugly, I just don't understand people.
If you're gonna get a gate. get a green one like the one on the left. Much more aesthetic than the chain linked one with venetian blinds slats woven through it.
Which is better illegal gate or cars that are stored on the street for weeks without getting tickets and hogging all "free" spaces in the neighborhood? that's what we have in LIC.'
Between illegal curb cuts, cars stored on streets, commercial vehicles parked overnight and then, of course, the people who save spots with garbage cans, there are absolutely no spots for the honest, non scammers to park. Calling 311 does nothing -- the whole system is a waste of money
