Another basement fire leaves man critical

From the Daily News:

A man was critically injured in a Queens house fire, officials said Saturday.

The blaze broke out just after 11:30 p.m. Friday in the basement of a three-story home on 66th St. near 50th Ave. in Maspeth, according to FDNY officials.

Firefighter Frank Busener of Ladder 136, met with choking smoke and heavy fire in the rear of the building, found the victim unconscious near a stairwell.

With help from Firefighter Roger Rudzewick and Captain Brian Neville, Busener brought the victim outside to waiting EMS workers, officials said.

The victim, who appeared to be about 30 years old, was in respiratory arrest, but EMS workers managed to get his pulse back as they rushed him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

This happens to be one of the nicest blocks in all of Maspeth. Some big houses with plenty of property.

When is the building, fire and police going to crack down on all illegal use of buildings?? It's good to make money, but lives and safety is more important !!

Another tragedy that the corrupt lazy NYC Dept of Buildings could have prevented.

Of course, the Mayor won't see this and will want to continue his crusade to legalize basement apartments to achieve his impossible goal of increasing the number of "affordable housing" units.

The Mayor will continue to legalize basement apartments; a fire fighter will die and the FDNY will be turning their backs on him. He really doesn't give a crap.

Its a double-edged sword.

While on one hand it would be nice of the 'authorities' were able to come in and investigate buildings for proper use and condition, etc, giving these groups more power to do so would likely go against property rights of the citizens.

Property rights are one of the core beliefs that this nation was founded upon. The government can't just come onto your land when they feel like it. They either have to have permisison from the owner, or have a warrant (which requires hard proof of crime to obtain).

The government has a right to do lots of things in the name of public safety. Investigating illegally converted units should be one of those things. I am all for property rights, but people shouldn't be a le to hide behind right while violating established laws and endangering the lives and welfare of the residents of these illegal units, and the firefighters who may be called on to respond to fires in these illegal conversions.
