Comrie vs. Smith?

From the Queens Tribune:

While State Sen. Malcolm Smith‘s attorney is asking for his court date to be pushed back until after voters go to the polls, it looks like a prominent Democrat may be stepping up to challenge him in a primary.

Sources tell QConf that after being courted by State Democratic leaders, Deputy Borough President Leroy Comrie may be ready to agree to run against Smith in the 14th Senate District.

Leroy ComrieComrie, who likely would not side with the Independent Democratic Conference – the way Smith did – is seen as a strong candidate who could easily unseat Smith.

After 12 years as a City Councilman, serving as chair of the City’s Land Use Committee and as Majority Leader, Comrie decided to run for Borough President. When Melinda Katz began to gain traction, Comrie was seen as the best option to be Katz’s second-in-command.

Less than two months into the Deputy Borough President’s job, it sounds like Comrie is getting ready to start making trips to Albany.

Comrie was forced to step aside so that MK could win the election. Everyone knows this. Comrie is no dummy, and deserves better than the stab in the back that was inflicted on him. He should run for Smiths seat by all means. He will be more productive and happier there.

ENOUGH. Vote for Clyde Vanel for crook Smith's seat. Get some new blood in here, not these dinosaurs like Comrie who have been in office for ever and do not have much to show for the communities that represent.

Don't drink the Comrie Kool-Aid.

Comrie Wins, he's a decent man in a field full of scumbags

Why should Comrie win, because he is a decent man in a sea of scumbags. That is like picking out a pile of shit that does not smell as bad as the other piles of shit. Shit is still shit and being decent does not necessarily translate into a good leader.

Comrie has not done very little in terms of quality of life issues in Jamaica and he was councilman there for 12 years.

It is this type of thinking that really ends up hurting. Pick the person who is the lesser of two evils, instead of picking a person who is best qualified and will actually do something for the community.

Poster must have already drank the Comrie Kool-Aid.

Joe
You need to throw your hat in the ring in 3 years.
I bet you would make it. You say what people want to hear...no holds barred. You should give it some thought.

Comrie is a great man and a proven leader. he is one of the nicest people you can ever hope to meet. and his political accomplishments are outstanding. he has brought in the most discretionary funds for his district over the past 12 years as city council member, and makes a genuine effort to listen to and address peoples problems even though he might not always be able to solve them. he will also be taking a $50,000 paycut due to switching from deputy borough president (about 130,000 a year) to state senator (79,500 a year). he really is dedicated to serving the people of his community...
