Bayside community leaders said they were displeased with trash pick-up efforts along Bell Boulevard.
Two local community activists - Jack Oshier and Community Board 11's Frank Skala - say that the city often leaves bags of trash sitting on the commercial strip for three days at a time, especially on weekends.
"When we had that recent day of 90 degree weather, it smelled," Oshier said. "On Saturday morning, you'll find trash bags piled up on every corner. There are usually two or three, but sometimes as many as six."
The city's Sanitation Department could not immediately be reached for comment.
Oshier said the department has done a good job in terms of getting back to him to discuss complaints. But he believes the city does not have the manpower for trash pick-up in the community.

Mr. Skala is still kicking it? Good for him. He was my social Studies teacher, and his wife my math teacher. They were good teachers.

Open letter to Mr. Skala: perhaps you can come by 223rd Street to view the aborted Huang project. The matter needs attention. Our councilman has been busy doing "other things". The Huangs are actively marketing the property. There are concerns about who will buy it.
It is only a few blocks from your home. It is a blight on the neighborhood. The DOB is obviously not monitoring the property. The houses have been vandalized over and over again.
The houses were boarded up. The boarding has been ripped from the doors and just thrown on the ground. The property is overgrown; rampart with raccoons; dog excretment; mosquitos; vermin (human and unhuman).
Your attention would be greatly appreciated.

He's right. Sanitation doesn't have enough manpower. We cut Sanitation to the bone and promote BiDs to clean our streets, at added expense to the business owners.
Could someone pass the message about the Huang project to Mr. Skala .........................
