Man- I was hoping for one of those "pimped out" turbans with the fan on top, like the guys wear in those Bollywood dance numbers, but a bandana with the kadha on it rates a grin, anyway.

I didn't even know that Gabe Pressman was still alive. I see he's finally started to ease up on the shoe polish and let his hair get gray.

Nice story - they should allow the tuban and beards of the Siks in the Police Dept - these are exceptionally good citizens and people. If others religions can be police officers while wearing their garb why not these folks?

The head dress means they cant wear their cap as part of the required dress uniform (parades, funerals, etc), and the beard makes for several issues. One, in a struggle, it can be grabbed and used to inflict pain on the officer, and two it conceals the face, and you need to be able to ID officers for legal reasons.

It's a shame that Sikhs can't serve in the NYPD, because you won't find a group of people who are more hard-working and honest. We could use more of those qualities in our cops.

Britain may have come up with a solution ... have police use a patka instead of a turban. The patka is much smaller and can fit under a helmet when used in a riot or tactical situation.

The U. S. Army has also been able to make it work, Captain Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi is a serving intelligence officer.

They ARE allowed to become Police Officers, as long as they are willing conform to the uniform standards like everyone else. There are no exceptions for other religions. Each religion is allowed to wear required religious garb as long as it doesn't interfere with the proper wearing of the uniform.

And a solution presents itself.

"Let his hair get gray"? I thought Gabe was pretty old when I watched him on the black and white Zenith in the 60s!

Good for him. Glad he's still doing it!
