Traffic free-for-all in Sunnyside

Cars and trucks are knowingly riding the wrong way in Blissville...
Here's the news story.

And bicyclists are apparently doing the same in Sunnyside proper. From the Sunnyside Post:

The incident occurred at about 7pm, August 22, and witnesses claim the cyclist was riding the wrong way down 43rd Ave before he hit a moving car broadside.

Be careful out there, folks. Lots of dingbats on wheels.

the greenpoint ave, exit at the L.I.E (westbound) has no right turn exodus northbound on local streets, until the intersection. this results in a huge back-up of traffic at this converge for 3-4 blocks,at rush hours.

the local streets are all one-way (southbound) into the L.I.E. foundation.

the D.O.T. can sign a street northbound ,to relieve the congestion and stop irate motorists from making a right turn to escape, and break the law.

the residents can request speed bumps to slow the motorists down.if this isn't done ,some one is bound to be killed eventually.

someone must have common sense and solve this problem.

They're all very narrow streets except fr 39th Street. Do you think that all of the people who live on 39th street want all of the truck traffic there? That's why it was made one-way to begon with.

when someone is killed ,will you then use common sense ,when it is too late ?

making all of the local sreets one -way south is the cause of the problem.

been there ...many years...you caused a mess with one way signs...

It is common sense to keep it this way, as it has been since the 1980s (I lived on 39th Place for years). To allow that volume of traffic on those streets is insanity and will result in more casulaties.

one wonders what the death toll was before 1980 and the local streets were signed one-way northbound, when the L.I.E .exit traffic westbound was not trapped for 4-6 blocks ?

Maybe that'swhy the street system is laid out the way it is. Before that, you may have had a lot of trucks and other traffic rolling up the small side streets.

This probably goes back to when the whole BQE/LIE interchange was rebuilt (remember when there was actually a traffic light on the BQE's main roadway?). It probably funnelled a lot more traffic onto Hunters Point Avenue and away from 43rd Street, a pretty wide street. The people on the side streets (and probably 39th Street)most likely saw an incredible increase of traffic coming up their blocks and screamed, and the city responded.
