MTA kills Whitestone businesses

From the Queens Chronicle:

A once vibrant commercial strip on 14th Avenue between Parsons Boulevard and 145th Place now faces extinction from a shortage of parking spaces, say merchants and their partisans.

On behalf of the block gangrened by four vacant storefronts, Assemblyman Ed Braunstein (D-Whitestone) has asked the MTA to consider moving the Q76 bus stop on 14th Avenue to one on the southeast corner of Parsons Boulevard and 14th Avenue, thereby creating new spots for customers.

In addition to property taxes as high as $14,000, “the parking situation is really a crisis for us,” said Robert Orzo, owner of Malba Delicatessen on the southwestern corner of 14th Avenue and 145th Place. On weekdays, there are at most five spaces on the block available to patrons of his deli and neighboring stores.

Customers cannot park at the bus stop, at the corner in front of Malba Deli — because stalled vehicles will block the sightlines of oncoming traffic for cars turning onto 14th Avenue from 145th Place — or on the northeastern corner of the block. Usually, there are even fewer parking spaces open, because, according to Orzo and Community Board 7 District Manager Marilyn Bitterman, MTA bus drivers park their cars for the day in the neighborhood before catching an early morning, free ride on the Q44 over the bridge to the West Farms bus depot in the Bronx. Orzo said these MTA employees rarely patronize his establishment: “They’re not bringing business to the block. They’re chasing it away.”

There is a local developer waiting to get their hands on this piece of property to convert into a mixed use, coop commercial building.

Look out, Chuck has already given the green light as the developer prints at his shop and promises to continue.

Tony Avella serves Evan stavisky's client book and not the shop owners in whitestone.

Huh? Did this bus stop just appear there recently, or has it been there for years and years?

This not a State Senate problem, as usual it's a City Council and CB7 issue and neither Halloran or Kelty, Apelian, or Bitterman are doing anything to help the community. Unload Halloran the next election petition to revise the rules of the Community Boards.

The bottom line is that Avella is in the wrong profession. He should have been an actor. He acts like he cares when he couldn't give a sh*t about the community he was elected to serve. What a disappointment!

Next Council election write in Alfredo Centola. When you go to vote take your voting card and at the bottom of the list of candidates for city council will be printed the word "other" with a blank line next to it. Fill in the circle next to word "other" and write in "Alfredo Centola".
Parking problem solve!

And this takes Avella off the hook because...? Obviously city oaficials (elected and selected) are not up to the task at hand!

All MTA or DOT are going to do is f*** up that intersection. The only things these agencies know how to do is create bike/bus lanes and pedestrian crossing islands.

They do not comprehend the concept of adding parking. You thought it was bad now, wait till they are done with it and the surrounding 5 block radius is all no standing anytime with bike lanes and pedestrian plazas on the corner.

At least you know he is honest, and owes no one, especially none of the developers. He will stand up for the taxpayer in the community.

I will be writing in ALFREDO CENTOLA, the next council election. I urge you all to do the same. Think about it, lets keep changing them until they do the right thing.
