Saving pets from death row

From the Daily News:

Homeless animals on Death Row at shelters across the state could get a better chance of survival with new legislation under review in Albany.

The bill, unveiled by Assemblyman Micah Kellner last week, would make it tougher for shelter officials to bar rescue groups from taking these unwanted cats and dogs.

"Rescue groups want to get ahold of these animals and find them a forever home," said Kellner (D-Manhattan). "Right now it is up to the discretion of the shelter which groups they allow in."

Some advocates fear the bill would allow hoarders and irresponsible rescuers to pull the homeless pets without oversight.

The bill is especially important in New York City, Kellner said, where thousands of stray cats and dogs are killed every year because there is not enough shelter space to hold them or people to adopt them.

Rescue groups step in and pull unwanted animals out of shelters to prevent them from being euthanized. Some groups have their own facilities or use foster homes to house these dogs and cats until they can be adopted.

Long-promised full-time shelters in Queens and the Bronx have never been built, meaning all stray animals are brought to facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Why does anyone even waste money euthanizing animals? Just send them to the Elevators of the Grant Houses and someone will gladly dispose of the Animal.

Why don't we euthanize the people living at the Grant House and use the place as an animal shelter?

Because its more humane then allowing them to starve or freeze to death.

Send them into the wild. Problem solved. I fear that Kellner's bill will make it easy for Crazy Old Cat Lady to gain more companions.

It should be illegal to sell pets in New York City while we're killing animals of the very same species like this. Tough luck if you want a pure breed as if it was a designer label. Pet stores should sell supplies and services.

Right on, Erik!

This is a great bill to be put into law. I'm all for it.

Whoa, you people, I am not getting a good impression here. The issue is not people, the projects or whatever. The issue is unwanted pets! Maybe you have the right to be bitter at some things, but it is people who have caused the animal problems! Killing them is not the answer, the answer is not disposal, it is responsible pet ownership, and that begins with fixing an animal when you get it. The answer is also realizing that taking in a pet is a lifelong commitment and is not something to be taken lightly. I agree that life is not something that we have the right to destroy! These creatures, created by God, have the right to live their lives just as we do! They do have feelings. The problem has to start being eradicated by you. Adopt one of these poor little souls, and give that little one love! You will be rewarded with such a deep friendship that you will not find yourselves so angry at this world anymore! I have been there myself. I used to detest cats, I thought they were the Devils creation. Until I had one given and made up my mind to love her. Now, I am another crazy cat lady, and I only pray on Judgement day that the Lord will consider that I was ignorant and ruthless, a cold-hearted person until I learned the way to love from a little 10 pound purball kitty called Nutmeg.
