These big stupid buildings serve as pillars of Thriving North East Queens.
The local Greek-American community has contributed greatly to the relative high standard of living here in NE Queens.
I'm a fan of this blog but its become apparent it has a tendency to pick on certain ethnic groups; in particular the Greeks and Bukharians(2 of the wealthiest ethnic groups in the USA no less.)Jealous perhaps??
The link you provided obviously portrayed the new Greek Church in a negative light.
The author of forgotten-ny clearly states he/she prefers the tiny, old greek church that in no way could accomodate the large Greek community in Whitestone e.t.c.
And fyi the construction of the church and school mentioned above was funded by local Malba billionaire Efstathios Valiotis. He emigrated to queens 30 years ago as a dishwasher and is a true rags to riches american story. And he still lives in malba.
You can build a bigger church without having it look like a mansion a mobster would build. Doesn't matter if the guy who donated all the money to build it is rich, money obviously can't buy taste or class.
Typical for this blog. Anti-Italian, Greek, Jew etc. They like old dilapidated buildings and everyone to have blond hair & blue eyes and anything that goes slightly against what they like they attack. And yes it is jealousy because they are too cheap to fix up their own shanty houses
It's funny, but most of the page that I linked to is not about that church. Yet you can't stop acting as though it is.
If you have money, the house of your dreams, life is good, and think that thing is beautiful, then why pick anonymous internet fights with people who don't? Sounds like you might be masking an inferiority complex. I suggest therapy.
And it's Sunday - shouldn't you be inside that church right now?
I'm, ah, capable of being FAR more negative than this:
"It was an orange-brick, multi-domed structure with dozens of arched windows, appearing like a Xanadu out of mundane earthly Queens.
"However it was far from a stately pleasure dome. It was the new Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, and including its community center it takes up the entire east side of 150th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues.
"When I visited Whitestone previously in 2007, Holy Cross was housed in the humble and dilapidated, yet proud, building formerly at 12th and 150th seen at right. The little blue and white building had originally been the Epworth Methodist Church, taken over by Holy Cross in 1975. Holy Cross' website only makes it to 2001, but the story of the old church is detailed."
I was going to point out that nothing on your page talked about the church negatively. But some people read what they want to read and take offense at everything. Victimization syndrome.
Let's call that new church what it really is: a piece of shit eyesore. I don't care who or what worships inside it, it's a piece of shit no matter what.
Not when they are expressing their opinion as fact.Mr.Walsh is clearly going out of his way to insult the congregants.
Walsh should let Sergey advertise and attach links for forgotten-ny.Besides sergey is a real journalist and the only writer for queens newspapers that doesn't write like a fool.
That said, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion and taste. Just because myself and others think this building is gaudy and awful looking does not mean that others do not like and appreciate it. To each their own, we just want to express our own opinions and have the right to do so, just as others have the right to display their own style and taste.
"Typical for this blog. Anti-Italian, Greek, Jew etc. They like old dilapidated buildings and everyone to have blond hair & blue eyes and anything that goes slightly against what they like they attack. And yes it is jealousy because they are too cheap to fix up their own shanty houses"
I am blonde haired with green hair you racist pig, AND I say you have taste up your friggin' azz if you think that building and all the others just like it are NOT gaudy!
Who are you SNOOKIE'S mother?
Just because YOU come from under a rock doesn't mean that the rest of us have to live like that.
You can't be that stupid to believe that Whitestoners are "too cheap" to KNOCK DOWN their GORGEOUS nature stone tudors and wooden colonials, etc. and replace it with a LARGE MOUND OF COLORED CEMENT! Oh and let's not forget the big fat marble pillars on the front porches - they're bigger than the house itself sometimes - true artists you pigs are . . . HAH!
Kevin Walsh does a great job with his website and book. He is entitled to express his opinion any way he sees fit. Thanks Kevin, keep up the good work.
And by the way, his comments seem to be directed the physical appearance of the building. Because this particular building happens to be a Greek church doesn't mean that his comments have any kind of anti-Greek sentiment. It's hard to comment about anything nowadays without offending or upsetting someone because we are becoming a culture of overly sensitive over protective pussies who take offense at any perceived slight, whether real or not. Grow some thicker skin people.
At first I thought that was a picture of a Bukharian McMansion in Forest Hills.
Me too! Glad to hear it's a Church, still very much out of character with anything else in Queen except, the Chinese buffet palace on Queens Blvd opposite TDBank. Now that building is truly stupid-ndous! Mal-oderious!
"They like old dilapidated buildings and everyone to have blond hair & blue eyes and anything that goes slightly against what they like they attack"
to the poster that suggests that those of us who are offended by these comments grow thicker skin - the above was an extremely racist comment and NOT a "perceived slight" - thanks for the sermon Father though.
We'll have a borough of religious fanatics - ain't that grand?
Has any of you seen Flushing North? Did you know that roofing material comes in high gloss burgundy shingles with chrome tips? And that large high gloss burgundy dragons on the roof wards off evil spirits . . . or is it people from other cultures - it's one or the other I can't remember.
"the above was an extremely racist comment and NOT a "perceived slight""
How exactly was that a racist comment babs? I don't think the poster was making a racist comment, he was trying to insinuate that previous posters were racist. It's not the same thing.
You definitely need some thicker skin babs, especially since you post here on QC.
Don't you just love all the "trees and beautiful green lawns?" These are the same people who will be complaining when we have downpours that lead to flooding.
I dont mind that the building is big. I dont mind that the building is a church.
What i *DO* mind is how tacky is looks. What happened to marble? to limestone? to wood shingles?
Why do you have to make it a giant orange blob made of home-depot materials?
Throughout history, the one thing that could be counted on with architecture was that at least the churches would be built correctly... Now, we get this crap.
Hell, your proportion of columns is completely wrong, and your arches are not correct, either, as they don't return to vertical when the reach the capitals. savages!
Well, i guess this is what happens when you give the contract to cousin Mikinos instead of hiring a competent builder.
Queens is over!! move out now while you still can!!! We need to leave NYC before its too late!!
Lol, Heard that 20 years ago and the city only got better. Yeah run out of Whitestone what a terrible neighborhood. btw if Queens is so bad why are you still here?
Italicized passages and many of the photos come from other websites. The links to these websites are provided within the posts.
Why your neighborhood is full of Queens Crap
"The difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." - George Washington Plunkitt
The above organizations are recognized by Queens Crap as being beneficial to the city as a whole, by fighting to preserve the history and character of our neighborhoods. They are not connected to this website and the opinions presented here do not necessarily represent the positions of these organizations.
The comments left by posters to this site do not necessarily represent the views of the blogger or webmaster.

Great story - short and to the point!
Whitestone is becoming UGLY thanks to these big stupid buildings.

SHAME ON YOU CRAPPER!!
How did I "pick on" an ethnic group by linking to a page about Whitestone? I link to every Queens-related page on Forgotten-NY.
Not one tree on the entire property.
The link you provided obviously portrayed the new Greek Church in a negative light.

Its a neo-classical style church, which is the style 90% of all orthodox churches are constructed.
But I guess you would prefer a Gothic style like some drunk would build ala St.Pats Cathedral.
With that last remark, I'm hiding under the sofa until the rocks and bottles stop flying. See ya.
Time to look up neoclassical architecture images.
Yes, I can see the resemblance...

I'm not picking a fight with you crapper,I said I'm a fan of this blog but sometimes it seems the commenters are out to get certain ethnic groups.
P.S. I go to to the early morning service(6am)to avoid the crowds that congregate at this beautiful Neo-classical Church.
Neoclassical? Try neocrappical.

I do, however, call a concrete-lawned building with a metallic fence and a garage in the basement a "smear of offal."
Which it is, architecturally speaking.

I was going to point out that nothing on your page talked about the church negatively. But some people read what they want to read and take offense at everything. Victimization syndrome.
Mr.Walsh,
You completely discredit yourself when you state your opinion as fact.
Are you even an architect??
Who said he was passing it off as fact? And what the hell was so offensive about his description?
Orange domed, appearing like xanadu, whatever that means, thats offensive when talking about any House of Worship.
I suggest you read his post again.
I suggest you read his post again.
I suggest you go back to 3rd grade!
Orange domed it is, and Xanadu was a palace.
Again, what is so offensive?
Let's call that new church what it really is: a piece of shit eyesore. I don't care who or what worships inside it, it's a piece of shit no matter what.
The above post confirms my argument.
Checkmate.
What is your argument? That most people think that is an ugly building and are not entitled to express their opinions?
Not when they are expressing their opinion as fact.Mr.Walsh is clearly going out of his way to insult the congregants.
Walsh should let Sergey advertise and attach links for forgotten-ny.Besides sergey is a real journalist and the only writer for queens newspapers that doesn't write like a fool.
And to you crapper, did you conduct a scientific poll that determined the majority of people do not like the church architecture??
And this scientific poll you took, was it people that actually lived in whitestone?
OK, let the polling begin.
Live in Whitestone- check
Think this building looks awful- check
Not one of the previous
commenters- check
That said, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion and taste. Agreed.I respect your opinion and appreciate the mature way you said it,unlike others;namely kevin walsh.
Let bygones be bygones and we should save the vitriol for people who deserve it such as moby stavisky, and her no-neck son.

Speaking of which, got change for a grand? I need to make a donation to the Sri Chinmoy memorial fund.

I agree, every time I drove by this place, I used to think it was a catering hall. It reminds me of the Spa Castle in College Point.
