Hoping for a more patriotic Flushing

Letter to the Editor (Times Ledger):

It was certainly interesting and exciting in Flushing with all the celebrations for Chinese New Year. Isn’t it wonderful that people from all over the world can come to this great country and live the American Dream?

Wouldn’t it also be nice to see this same amount of energy put into the celebrations honoring America? How about flying the American flag on holidays? But then, do we really need a holiday to fly our flag? How about a Memorial Day parade in downtown Flushing? What about celebrating the Fourth of July?

Let’s all remember that freedoms are granted to people living here because the members of our armed forces fought and died to keep us free.

Here’s to a more patriotic Flushing. God bless America and all those who love her.

Mary Ann Boroz

Maybe Mary Ann Boroz should get off her fat ass and organize a parade if she wants one. I'd attend it.

Its not like the city is against parades...just file the proper paperwork, pay the right fees and ta-da! a parade.

All post-1000 AD immigrants and their descendants should be deported. If goin' home was good enough for Leifr Eiríksson and Guðríðr Þorbjarnardóttir - and these were some serious people - it should be good enough for the scum and rabble that have washed up on these shores in the last thousand years.

i do not believe in extending our "sanctuary city" that our lib/dem politicians have forced on us.

but i do attend the Memorial Day parade at Little Neck/Douglaston each year. i am proud to observe the excellent marching R.O.T.C . students from Francis Lewis H.S. they include Hispanic,African-American,Chinese,Korean and Caucasian young patriots.the coach has done a wonderful job. among other ethnic groups also.

they remind me of my boot camp months at at Bainbridge ,Md.

Why do y'all even mention deportations? It sounds stupid and the point of this letter is that the newcomers should assimilate, like immigrants did in the past.

Georges said...

Ok one need to honor own tradition. But these folks can try harder to assimilate into society - few do. The few that do are great folks and I wish the rest would get off their robotic modes and let their hair down sometimes.

Otherwise the general population looks at the Chinese community to serve them cheap food that smell like themselfs.

The military (especially in an imperialistic country) has never defended "freedom." An imperialistic military only serves to extract resources and protect colonies.

(LOL) Yeah...right...do we want to offend the United State's lucrative Chinese trading partner with the display of an American flag?

Not with TDC (Wellington Chen's pals) building a massive mini colony over the current Municipal Parking Lot #1 in downtown Flushing.

TDC looks like it has designs to control a whole swath of land from Muni #1 to Willets Point...maybe even on into Corona.

After the "Blacks" have been kept in there place (since they cannot outright oust Macedonia AME Church) most likely those "troublesome" Latinos can be removed from Corona.

Today Floo-shing tomorrow NYC!

But which flag shall we fly over the new bustling Flushing?

Mainland China's or Taiwan's?

Way back in 1991 I had attended a huge march down Main Street with over 150 other people to protect the historic RKO Keith's from the infamous criminal/builder Tommy Huang.

The American flag preceded the signs and banners down the street...as was appropriate etiquette for any march.

Later that week there appeared in one of the weekly newspapers a letter to the editor suggesting that
the march appeared "anti Asian".

References were also made to the use of American patriotic music being played at the termination point of the rally on Northern Boulevard.

The group that sponsored the demonstration did have a proper sound permit.

Maybe Myra Baird Herce, now claiming the presidency of the Flushing Chamber of Commerce, why not get off your fat rump and organize a good old time parade and proudly display "Old Glory"?

Maybe she (and some others) "don't want to offend the Asians".

Assimilation is not an option.

There's such a critical mass of people from other countries and the convenience of travel, rights as citizens (without actually being U.S. citizens) that for them Queens is an "address", and "home" is outside the United States.

The United States for them is a land of opportunity. Just don't ask them to become American in mind and spirit. It's not worth the effort.

The sad thing are teenagers who were locked into this thing from birth and some, never having left the U.S., speak and write in no language well: not English and not the language their parents and extended family speak either. Children without a real country or culture.

GO AWAY IMMIGRANTS!!!!!!!

now call me bigot said...

It's not just the downtown areas that are being affected.

The Chinese are colonizing everywhere...even as far as upstate Putnam & Sullivan counties.

Bloomberg's plan to accommodate about a million more people is really to make more room for the Chinese.

The "yellow peril" complete with their uncivilized lifestyles...overcrowding once fine neighborhoods...living elbow to elbow...and abusing U.S. laws are here to stay and more are coming!

But they often get off when they commit illegal acts where someone else gets jailed.

Tommy Huang for example.

ONCE AGAIN...AMERICA'S NEW POLICY IS TO CREATE ANOTHER SET OF RULES FOR OUR CHINESE TRADING PARTNER AND CHIEF DEBTOR!

BYE BYE AMERICAN PIE...LEARN MANDARIN!

It is the greedy REPUBLICAN employers that ENSURE the illegal immigrants' place in our society. Who else will work for nothing and not complain? Who else will work under unsafe conditions? How EASY for the greedy employer to hide his income from the work of the undocumented.

IT was REAGAN BTW who gave amnesty to the illegals in 1986 thereby encouraging the HORDES that came after.

It IS the Libs who demand that these people be treated humanely.

Got that straight now?

Bigot - They are KOREAN too! Specifically - they are Asian.

The Chinese and Koreans have a work ethic like no other. They have a respect for education and their children will reap the rewards of one. They benefit any society. Their children also are very hip and excel in the arts - they also inter-marry with other races.

What we are seeing is a 1st generation cluster - they live together to help each other. I truly believe our nabs will change AGAIN in the future as the children will quite naturally live elsewhere.

BUT - the Asians, like other cultures, have the good and the bad.

You're kidding right? They excel in the arts but they are far from "hip". Inter-marry? They're the last to inter-marry.

The truth about Reagan:

1. The Reagan Amnesty granted a blanket Amnesty to Illegal Aliens.

FALSE

The Reagan Amnesty wasn’t for all Illegal Aliens, there were many requirements that had to be met for Illegals to be eligible. Among them were certain residency requirements, no felony convictions, less than three misdemeanor convictions, medical examinations, etc. They can be found in the following subsection:

"Sec. 245A. (a) Temporary Resident Status.--The Attorney General shall adjust the status of an alien to that of an alien lawfully admitted for temporary residence if the alien meets the following requirements:

2. The Reagan Amnesty granted automatic citizenship to Illegal Aliens.

FALSE

As seen above in Section 245A., the adjustment of status for Illegal Aliens was to admission for “temporary residence.”

3. The Reagan Amnesty granted citizenship to some Illegal Aliens.

FALSE

Again, as seen above in Section 245A., the adjustment of status for Illegal Aliens was to admission for “temporary residence.”

4. The Reagan Amnesty granted automatic permanent residence (green cards) to Illegal Aliens.

FALSE

Once again, as seen above in Section 245A., the adjustment of status for Illegal Aliens was to admission for “temporary residence.”

For permanent residence requirements, one must go to Section 245(b):

"(b) Subsequent Adjustment to Permanent Residence and Nature of Temporary Resident Status.--

The adjustment to permanent residence for legalized Illegals wasn’t “automatic,” they had to be legalized as temporary workers first, and subsequently adjusted to permanent status. For adjustment to permanent status, the legalized-Illegal had to apply between eighteen and thirty months after being granted his temporary residence, under Section 245(b).1.A.

5. The Reagan Amnesty granted immediate permanent residence (green cards) to some Illegal Aliens.

FALSE

And yet again, as seen above in Section 245A., the adjustment of status for Illegal Aliens was to admission for “temporary residence.”

Same 245(b)(1)(A) applies: requirements for all Illegals adjusted to temporary residence, as seen above at Question #4, before being granted permanent residence.

6. The Reagan Amnesty was granted to Illegal Aliens, free of charge.

FALSE

Illegal Aliens had to pay a fee to be legalized as temporary residents, under Section 245(c)(7)(A) :

"(7) Application fees.--

"(A) Fee schedule.--The Attorney General shall provide for a schedule of fees to be charged for the filing of applications for adjustment under subsection (a) or (b)(1).

Bonus Question:

The Reagan Amnesty mentions the word “Amnesty.”

FALSE

Do the word search on Title II, Section 201 yourself.

Or scroll below, where I’ve posted the entire Section of the legislation that is devoted to Legalization of Status for Illegal Aliens.

Double Secret Bonus Question:

The word “Amnesty” is mentioned in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

FALSE

Go ahead; search every Title and Section of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

The Reagan Amnesty didn’t call itself an Amnesty, anywhere in the legislation.

The Chinese MIX - take a look at any college campus today.

They are not HIP? - There is an Asian American RENAISSANCE happening FYI. Take visual media, for instance, they have gained enormous respect for their contribution. Musically - they are more often than not MASTERS are their instruments. In FASHION - Vera Wang, Jason Wu, Philip Lim are just a few of the names that just about EVERYONE into fashion is into.

I don't know what your definition of hip is - but, I am CERTAIN though that it differs from mine.

Your comments are embarrassing ME - a third generation (white) German American.

Crappy - I hope you are not talking about me. I rarely preach my politics for the simple reason that I believe we are better off just sticking to the issues and not pointing left/right fingers at each other - To do so doesn't solve anything AND most importantly to me - it alienates.

I hope that I have not been misunderstood here.

Queens Crapper said...

No I am not talking about you, Babs. There is a moron who comes here every day and posts that the country should be nothing but Anglos, apparently trying to point out that the commenters here are racist. He fails every time.

Deke DaSilva: Ridgewoodian finally took a ride on the #7 train!

I've ridden the 7 many, many times. For eight years it used to be, if not my primary train, a good backup. My last time on it was last week when I travelled out to beautiful Flushing to attend the MTA's public hearing at the Sheraton. If you were there and stuck it out to the bitter end you would have heard me speak.

Anyway, the post 1000AD scum and rabble fill up not just the 7 but every other train as well, and every bus, cab, private automobile, scooter, bike, skateboard, and etc. in the whole city. They should all go back to whatever shitholes in Europe or Asia or Africa they came from, or their ancestors oozed out of. Me, that'll mean heading back to Italy, or maybe the Azores, or England. AIM Forever! Free Leonard Peltier! America for the Injuns!

Point taken, I suppose. But, really, I think the problem is with mammals (and possibly lizards) in general. All mammals (and possibly lizards), should be deported to whence they came. Those who refuse to go should be incinerated in a nuclear conflagration. The land should be given over to the plants that originally inhabited it.

Ridgewoodian said...

Babs:Now here's a good reason to stay away from public hearings if there ever was one.

Eh? I thought you were a decent person. (You do know that I'm not SERIOUS about deporting everyone who arrived here since the time of the Vikings, right?)

Oh, and my brief speech before the MTA board was well reasoned and to the point and generally wicked awesome; it would have been nice if more people could have heard it!

Ridgewoodian said...

Queens Crapper:Sounds like someone else must have written the speech for you then.

Nope. Wrote it myself. One page, four or five paragraphs. I rearranged it just before I got up and riffed off it a tiny bit. Probably 90 seconds or two minutes all told. I probably spoke too quickly since it's been a long time since I've trod a stage and I don't speak in public that often and I was a little nervous. Anyway, it was as good as any speech that night and better than many - including the endless demagogic prattling of numerous electeds.

If Mary Ann Boroz cares so much about those who died for our freedom, what is this shit about a parade on Memorial Day? Parades are celebratory; that's why they are traditional for July 4, St. Pat's Day, Columbus Day, Indian & Israeli Independence Days, ad infinitum. The traditional thing to do on Memorial Day is to go to cemeteries and put flowers on the graves of the war dead, and in the old days in Flushing, local pols gave boring speeches at the Bowne House. Memorial Day is not a day of celebration, okay? Cover the hood in US flags but NO damned parades.
Save one for Veteran's Day.

Queens Crapper said...

There have been Memorial Day parades all over the city for decades.

Get a grip, asshole.

Babs said...

Anonymous - "Parades are celebratory"

We HONOR our veterans, the living and the dead, on Memorial Day - we SALUTE them and cheer when they pass us by. We celebrate the lives of those who came home and THANK our veterans for their sacrifice.

Got it?

You want to put flowers over a patch of dirt go right ahead fool. The bugs will appreciate it.

Anonymous said...

Flushing should have a May Day parade - I would get behind that.

We can have large placards of Chairman Mao like they did in the Cultural Revolution.
