City creates application for charter schools

BY NOAH ROSENBERG, Queens Courier

For the first time ever, parents and students across the five boroughs can now apply to every charter school in New York City via a common application.

The new 2010-2011 Common Charter School Application, according to the city Department of Education, is a sign of tangible progress in making the city’s 99 charter schools – as well as the 25-27 scheduled to open in September – accessible to New Yorkers.

The application is available in nine languages – including Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Korean, Russian, Urdu and Bengali.

Who supports charter schools? Obama, Paterson, Bloomberg and so on and so forth.

Did the charter school movement arise from nothing? Out of a grassroots local community effort? Not by any means. It has been financed by think tanks, PR firms and so on and so forth.

Charter schools are a nightmare train wreck that will wreck education in this country more than it already is wrecked. That half of the average middle class people even argue slightly for it means it is all over. The charter school forces have won. Isn't it great, we can have a magical charter school march in and it is going to fix everything. Or even fix something. It will fix nothing.

At the end of the day, the people who send their children to Brearley, Chapin, Spence, Dalton etc. will now get a check to help them with this.

The one good thing is the Catholic schools will start taking money from the government, which despite any assurances, of course will mean Catholic schools will start following rules made in government. It will be a good thing to see centuries of independent private Catholic schools in the USA come to an end.
