Ornamental trees planted in South Ozone Park’s Lefferts Playground as part of a living tribute to 9/11 victims were recently destroyed.

I think the legislature should make changes in the Criminal Mischief statute............Fuck with ANY public memorial and you get hit with a "D" Felony! Scumbag(s)
Could also be jerky children too. I've seen kids pull out their little hatchets or pocket knives from Boy Scouts ready to go to work and I've told them that the trees are $100 dollar trees (probably $1000 now) and ask if they have their wallets ready when the police come.
Sad news, hard to swallow that anyone in America be it a child or adult would do anything to destroy a memorial for those we lost on 9/11, I guess some people don't feel the same broken heart the rest of us do. I wish we had more memorials in the town we live in here in SE AZ, I wanted to do a Freedom Walk on 9/11 to memorialize all those we lost and to honor those who fought so bravely after, but ya know what? I couldn't even get a call back from city hall in time, but watch out next year, this town will be rolling on 9/11, shame is we live in a military town. I hope to someday come to NYC to see my daughter and to visit Ground Zero, I for one am still numb. Thanks New Yorkers, we love you all!
Replace them, these vandals can not win. What a sad state society has come to. No respect for anything. Perhaps starting with a larger tree would help deter attack.

Anyone who willfully destroys any living tree anywhere should be hanged from it by his feet for a few hours and then fined severely!
And for a memorial tree...throw 'em in jail!
Maybe a Muslim radical committed the crime.
9-11 wasn't enough?
