Queens Beaches Closed To Swimming Due To Hurricane Bill

NYC Parks Press Release

Closures are Possible through the Weekend Due to High Waves, Heavy Surf and Rip Currents; Conditions Continue to be Evaluated as Hurricane Progresses

Today, the Parks Department is closing Rockaway Beach, Coney Island Beach, Manhattan Beach, South Beach, Midland Beach and Wolfe's Pond Beach to swimming due to the approaching hurricane. Orchard Beach in the Bronx remains open assuming conditions do not deteriorate and the city's 63 pools and 650 spray showers offer opportunities to cool off.

The National Weather Service advises that although Hurricane Bill is hundreds of miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, beaches along the East Coast are beginning to see its effects today, and there are already waves eight feet tall or larger.

"As weather conditions are changing quickly, it is essential that people not enter the water at closed beaches," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "As always, beachgoers must obey the instructions of lifeguards, Police and other Parks and security personnel."

Impacts from Hurricane Bill are anticipated to include heavy surf, rip currents, coastal erosion, beach-over washes, and minor coastal flooding. The public can call 311 for information about beach closures and is advised to adhere to all rules and instructions at the beaches.

Hurricane Bill is currently a Category 3 Hurricane. The core of Hurricane Bill is expected to pass over the open waters between Bermuda and the east coast of the United States early Saturday.

YES, government intervention. I love when they tell me whats right for me and my abilities to control situations regarding my life. If I wan't to fucking swim in dangerous waters, LET ME SWIM IN THEM.

Another example of foolishness. Recently a man was a "hero" for saving his own 8 year old that he allowed in Reiss Park after hours.

If the lifeguard or a good samaritan dies because of your foolishness what them? Do you suppose your family will not sue the City under grounds of negligence? If they don't win, the city will still be out money.

If you want to swim where there are no lifeguards, find such a beach and drown on your own. There are plenty of them and there will be more after Labor day.

By your logic, I guess it's also o.k. to get drunk and stoned, and drive the wrong way down a parkway. That's dangerous also, but if you want to do something dangerous, you should be able to.

Q What does Bloomturd have in common with Hurricane Bill?

A They are both blowhards!

Sigh. I bet you're one of those fools who refuses to evacuate during a hurricane, too. And then puts a National Guardsman at risk because it's his job to rescue your dumb ass.

The beaches are closed because they don't want to put the LIFEGUARDS at risk to save idiots like you. But the ocean is not "closed" so be our guest and go drown. Just don't expect someone to jump in to rescue you, okay? And don't sue the city for failing to warn you.

If I choose to swim in dangerous waters and I die well then too bad for me. Recover my body (or not) and let me have my funeral, but for fucks sake LET ME SWIM!

Get drunk, get high thats up to you. I don't know about driving down a parkway tho.

Me swimming in the waters has little to no effect on the people around (if any).

Me/someone driving drunk on the parkway CAN have huge effects on people surrounding you (if any).

You bet im one of those fools who refuses to evacuate during a hurricane. I bet you're one of those Italian or Irish pea-brains who can acquire all sorts of information and come to a startling conclusion from 4 sentences.

If you go to a life-guarded beach they are obliged to try to save you. So if you're such a pea-brain that you cannot find an unguarded beach to indulge your guilty pleasures, that in and of itself speaks to your own intelligence.

Guilty pleasures? Wow archie a little over board there! Peoeple turn a blind eye to everything else in QUeens but a lil old marine can't take a swim.

Bureaucratic fuck!

If you read my comments you would see that I am fine with a Marine or anyone else who wants to take the chance to swim where there are no lifeguards, but the minute you put someone else in the position where their jobs or lives are in jeopardy because of you, you are out of line.

Again, if you really are any kind of swimmer or surfer you know exactly where you can swim without interference. Go there and keep others out of it.

whoa whoa whoa...listen you want to drown go ahead but don't insult the Italians and Irish just because they're smarter than you. And I agree if you want to go swimming during a storm do it where there are no lifeguards so they don't have to save your idiotic ass from drowning because if you're dumb enough to want to swim then you're dumb enough to drown and you risk another life now its not just your life you're risking but that of someone's daughter/son, brother/sister, or lover. How would yyou feel if you're lover saved a dumbass like you because they didn't heed the warnings that were given out you dumb shit! Instead of being a selfish, spoiled brat why don't you think about other people for a change?

So did you go swimming in an unguarded area this weekend, Anon #1?

Swimmer can't swim but surfers can surf... I think its time to call Al Sharpton.

I guess the people of Los Angeles and surrounding suburbs also had a "right" to stay in their houses while their neighborhoods burned. It's too bad that the goverment will "intervene" and try to save these idiots.

From the article:

"Those people were told to get out two days ago, and now we are putting our people in danger to get them out."

"Over the weekend, three people who refused to evacuate were badly burned when they were overrun by flames, including a couple who had sought refuge in a hot tub, authorities said."
