Baby Oystercatchers at Riis Park

From Citybirder:

The beach was nearly empty of people, but there were lots of nesting American Oystercatchers spread out along the sand. I counted at least 9 nests in areas that were roped off and marked with signs to keep out humans. One adult was sitting with two chicks about 5 yards from the boardwalk. American Oystercatcher chicks are precocial, meaning that they are fairly independent as soon as they hatch and fun to observe.

Marvelous photo, wonderful story, plus I never knew that there was a word "precocial." I live in Brooklyn but will be checking "Queens Crap" often, great website, thank you!

Actually, you have to admire nature. There are beautiful pheasants running around the grounds of Con Ed in Astoria and in Pelham Park next to the big garbage dump.

I've seen endangered orchids growing in big clumps by the side of a gas station.

Life was here before man, and will be when we are gone.
