Home Depot may pull out of Rego Park Mall

From the Queens Tribune:

Rego Park Center has already lost one retail giant and may be losing another.

Just weeks after Circuit City closed shop, Home Depot, the second largest retailer in the United States, expressed uncertainty about its deal to rent a significant portion of the shopping center’s 950,000 total retail square feet.

“We’re currently reviewing various options with the landlord on their site, but no decision has been made,” said Home Depot spokeswoman Jennifer King. “We’re trying to determine the best decision going forward.”

We don't need another Home Depot anyhow. The remaining choice is Wal-Mart and their every day low prices, and cheap Meds.

This is a very bad blow for one of the premier shopping areas in Queens. I fear that the last expansion may have been a mistake.

WalMart would be great, but of course the unions who are killing this city and state would do everything they can to torpedo it.

Yeah, that's not really a good place for a Home Depot. They should pull out.

A few years ago, I would have said no to a Wal-Mart but now, it's a sign of the times.

Unions don't kill the city and state they build them. The unions don't back walmart because they use non union. When sears parking lot went up and then came crashing down on people's cars it was non union labor. But when the new Queens Mall was getting done all union workers, cause the city didn't want the same mistake. Don't insult the blue collar union city workers.

The original plan was to have a Wal-Mart, but it was voted down. Now we'll have another unfinished construction site. Just was Queens needs more of.

Unions are accountable for the
overinflated prices we pay for everything.

Just ask Brian Mc Laughlin
where all the money goes to!

I'm not saying we don't need unions to protect workers from abuse
("bosses is bastards").

But a lot of unions have become as greedy and corrupt as the "bosses"!

The old Caldor's site in Flushing (vacant for at least 8 years now) could use a Walmart!

Signs of the times.

No need to fix up a home that might be in foreclosure soon.

Welcome the "99cents" stores to Rego Park!

Union workers aren't the problem (most of them), it's the union leadership and their followers. Actually, since the Taylor Laws were passed years ago, unions aren't as needed for basic workplace protections. Now, they milk the system and raise costs for everyone. The municipal unions are the worst and they are killing this state.

After all the trouble of building that monstrosity, now it might be vacant? What a joke this boro is.
Why did they have to put anything there in the first place? We have so many Home Depots close enough, and the neighborhood is already congested. I was happy when there was just an Alexander's in the area, surrounded by parking lots.

Put a Wal-Mart on that site. They will do a great business and they have prices people can afford. They are everywhere but in the boroughs. I have to go to Long Island when I need to go shopping. They also have a great pharmacy with reasonable prices for prescriptions. This area has a large senior population and would benefit by having a Wal-Mart in their neighborhood.

Best news I heard this year.

A Wal-Mart would be wonderful. I want to keep those factories in China churning out shit I don't really need. But the prices are so reasonable!

Anonymous said...

Just what Queens needs: a mega store that employs illegals, panders cheap Chinese made garbage (no more "Made in America" campaign), treats its employees like dog shit, kills off the competition and then raises prices sky high. Before you pine for this corporate criminal to segue into NYC, you'd better familiarize yourself with their MO. A year from now you'll all be crying that the prices are too high and there's no place else to shop.

Agree - Walmart is perfect! F**K the unions there are no working members left anyway. Their former members would love to save money and buy national brands all within a subway ride, instead of driving far like to NJ or LI.

Quick tell this to the Detroit automakers and workers - are there any of these left?

Danny Glasner said...

NO! no Walmart! Target has almost as good prices, and they treat the workers better!!

Anonymous said...

Home Depot is non-union, too. As is Target. And so am I. So I don't give a rat's behind if a store is non-union.

holy shit i was talking about the men and women who built the buildings, their union trades. when walmart builds a new site they hire non union construction workers. so if you want to walk into a building that may fall on your head or go on fire, go right ahead. just like the parking garage at sears on queens blvd. wasn't talking about the company itself, didn't know target's was non union too bad at least they would have better benefits.

They'll be calling this area "Rego Dark"....after the big retail stores' lights go out.

El Mundo Discount Mart opening here soon!

That and some more Russkie nightclubs!

When was the last time you looked at the label to find out where your small appliances, housewares, etc. are made?

That's right...in CHINA...even if you didn't buy them in Walmart!

You're living in the past fella.

Just seen last night on TV:
The biggest share of the world market for GM cars is in SHANGHAI!

Americans can no longer afford to buy the overpriced crappy cars we make!

So rather than build them better and lower the prices...Detroit chose to sell you out to Asia.

Shei, shei!
(I'm learning to speak Mandarin).

No bailout for GM....f--k 'em!

Bring back Alexander's. And while we are at it, also bring back Orbach's, A&S, Korvette's, Gertz, TSS etc. Classier shopping back in the day.

Anonymous said...

True!

I don't think this is a premiere shopping center any longer.

Perhaps the Bukharians will open up
their jewelry stores (fencing blood diamonds???) maybe?

Home Depot probably took one look at that building and went EWWWWW!!!

We need a park.

I am a union member and I take offense on what you said. It is obvious that you don't work in construction, probably sit your fat ass behind a desk all day. I bust my ass off everyday and there are times I feel they don't pay us enough. And lets not forget that the day laborers, who are unskilled, get less than mimimum wage and the bosses of these guys pocket the rest. Non union, unskilled, day laborers take three times longer and have to re-do half their work over and over. So who is cheaper?

There are too many retail properties.Look at metro&71st ave, can't fill it.The bowling alley on woodhaven off metro is empty!....Attention builders/developers:NO ONE HAS ANY CASH TO BUY A CONDO OR SHOP.........how long before atlas park is turned into a parking lot?????

Anonymous said...

I'll bet you've really got a "cushy" spot in construction.

You're just slinging that "hard working" shit at us!

Maybe you're a little shortchanged in brainpower too...knuckle head!

NOW YOU CAN TAKE SOME REAL OFFENSE!

Anonymous said...

Look for the union label...
your guarantee of corrupt leadership!

Sure, like there has been some problem of Walmarts just randomly collapsing across the country. This site is good for a laugh here and there. The parking garage at the old Sears site collapsed during construction because the Mafia company that was supplying the concrete screwed around with inferior product.
To the hard-working union member - no one is buying that crap. Unions have hard workers and they have lazy asses too, just like everywhere. The union actually protects the lazy ones because of the contract and work rules, and they get paid just as much as the better workers because it's all union contract.

Anonymous said...

I am not a construction worker, I am an office worker, but if you think being on a hot piece of steel or using an air hammer on a piece of concrete in the middle of the summer is easy, you are a real nutjob.

People die doing construction. Perhaps you should try doing a few repairs on your own home such as replacing the shingles on your roof or putting in a concrete wall before you talk.

I have family who came from Europe and did hard physical labor on their hands and knees so that their children could work in air conditioned offices. Ingratitude and arrogance are sickening.

OMG. I am the wife of a Union Plumber and shame all of u who dare say union workers are lazy. My husband works his ass off so u can live in a healthy safe environment. Like the other person said, and i know bc i was stuck on a train when sears parking lot collapsed, u wont see that happen at queens center. go look at the workmanship in the mall bathrooms... and Dont dare think that when ur child drinks from a water fountain from Walmart, that it isnt possible that a non-union worker put it in and pitched it wrong and ur darling child doesnt come down with a disease from tainted water. Please if u dont know what u are talking about dont talk. I am not saying i do not like a bargain, but at what price..do not ever call a union construction worker lazy. they are what built America and expecially NYC. Your ancestors would be ashamed of you...

Anonymous said...

well it's bad enough that area is congested with traffic why congest it more..home depot smell ya later

Anonymous said...

Maybe some Bukharian can buy that whole monstrosity and turn it into the ultimate McMansion!! They could do a reality show about it!

Anonymous said...

I really was looking forward to the Home Depot in Rego Park and hope the company reconsiders because this would be the most convenient HD for me to get to.

Anonymous said...

Union workers can screw things up too. and just because there is a structural failure doesn't mean it was because of the labor- it could be a design or a maintenance issue.

Hard working individuals who know what they're doing don't have much reason to be in a union- they'll get paid no more than the lazy moron next to them. Unions keep those people afloat while holding back the good ones.

Being afraid to walk into a building just because it was construction by non-union forces is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. How common are major structural failures (from which there is any risk of injury)? Not very. How many are due to construction? What about those built with inferior materials from a poor design that isn't properly maintained? Even if there are structures with only construction issues, how many were non-union? Not all, I bet.

I live in the area and a Home Depot would have been nice so close, but the one on Woodhaven is only a few minutes away.

What would be really nice is a real supermarket, or even a warehouse supermarket, food shopping in this area really is bad.

Anonymous said...

I live only blocks away and this is not the spot for a Home Depot, we already have one on Woodhaven Blvd, Rockaway Blvd and Linden Pl. And no matter what kind of store replaces them start thinking about another driving route. A Walmart would be welcomed.
