Non-English speakers not graduating

From the Daily News:

High school graduation rates have increased under Mayor Bloomberg - except for students not fluent in English.

While the general graduation rate climbed to 52.2% in 2007 from 46.5% in 2005, the rate for students learning English (called English language learners, or ELLs) dropped from 28.5% to 23.5% over the same period.

Advocates say some city efforts that have improved achievement in general missed the mark when it comes to English language learners.

Well, no kidding!

Commissar Death and Taxes is deliberately destroying the future of all New Yorkers' English-speaking citizen students by jamming into their classrooms these hundreds of thousands of progeny of illegal aliens.

What the hell are foreign language speaking people doing in classrooms where lessons, books, and all learning takes place in English?

Why doesn't the Commissar accommodate the servant/gardener workers for his wealthy benefactors by jamming these foreign language speakers in separate schools for dishwashers, busboys, burger flippers, roofers, and the other trades necessary to coddle his wealthy cronies?

Perhaps these skills are much too complicated for the folks at the Dept. of Education?

52% is an incredibly poor rate of graduation if you ask me.

English learners not doing well? Why not we spend tons of money for Teachers to get this done - go see Randy Winegarten the greedy head of the teachers union who give us teachers who suck wind do-nothings. Why are Catholic schools far superior and successful with Teachers that make only a 1/3 of their public school counterparts?

Go ask the parent of a Catholic highschool student how they have to work 2 jobs to pay 6k+ annually to keep their stundent in school. This is not the millionaire haven of the upper Eastside schools with an annual tuition of 35K we are talking about. We are talking Queens, Bronx, Brookly & Staten Island where folks are scared to send their kid to public schools to come out failures or drop out.

Or have their children serve as "punching bags" for the usual suspects.

Support school vouchers!

Immersion into the English language is key to any foreign born child's success in this country. The Board of Ed would rather spend millions of dollars with their English as a Second Languagae Program, by teaching these kids in both languages. What a waste of money. This program was invented to provide jobs for foreign born teachers. Let's just immerse these kids in English and within a year, they will be speaking English. Stop coddling these foreigners. Business is conducted in English in this country, and if you want children to succeed, you have to make sure they learn English. If that were to happen, there would be no one to be servants to the rich people. Slavery is alive and well in the 21st century.

Yes, we're extremely happy!

We Archie Bunkers want immigrant children to perform poorly, so that our country's competitiveness vis-à-vis emerging powers such as China, India, Brazil, and Russia is diminished. We also want our standard of living to decrease substantially! Down with GDP! Down with GDP!

We'd definitely prefer a dystopian environment in which immigrant kids join street gangs, skip school, cause trouble, engage in crime, take up drinking and drugs, and for the young teenage ladies - get pregnant! In fact, with all our current economic woes, this couldn't happen at a better time!

All of us Archie Bunkers look forward to higher taxes to support social services for these budding monsters!

Who needs a high standard of living? We Archie Bunkers prefer to have a low standard of living!!

Repeat after me - Down with GDP! Down with GDP!! Down with immigrant graduation rates!!!

Except that you're forgetting one small detail. Catholic schools can throw out disruptive students as well as special needs students. Public schools can't throw out anyone. Even suspension is now a joke. Suspension is in-house and the student is placed in another class wreaking havoc on another teacher and class.

You're comparing apples and oranges.

The Board of Education needs to stop spending so much money on translation costs for every letter that is sent home from school. Take that money and have English classes for both children and parents. The taxpayers spend a big chunk of money to translate into a multitude of languages. It's time for Obama to pass an English Only policy in America. If the immigrants don't like this, they are free to leave and go back to their homeland where they can speak their native language all the time.

I've had Hispanic parents during Parent-Teacher Conferences who were so shocked and disappointed I couldn't speak Spanish! So we basically signaled to each other or used their kid to translate.

And the problem is not just in the schools. Everywhere you look there's a sign in another language. They were actually selling Entenmann's cakes that were written only in Spanish. I didn't even know what I was buying. But it looked good. Politicians are too afraid to go there. And it's a shame. It is ruining this country. By allowing everyone to impose their culture on us, it's squashing the American culture as we know it.
Sometimes I'm just convinced they want to keep these immigrants, illegals, whatever down so they don't better themselves. Let's face it. What kind of decent job will you get if you can't speak English?

Why would I think I could go to Finland and land a job without the ability to speak Finnish? Why are we spending millions on translations--including our ballots, for God's sake. We are fools who thrive on cheap labor. If we don't demand that students speak fluent English and reclaim our schools, we are lost.

I read an amusing anecdote a couple years ago:

A parent who only speaks Spanish was called into the school to discuss with the teacher why their child was doing so poor. The teacher told the parent that their child was failing, and had an "F" in every subject.

To which the confused Spanish speaking parent replied, "F no es fabuloso?"

I once demanded to see a parent one afternoon after her daughter was giving me and several girls in my class a difficult time. She could not speak English so her boyfriend told me that he would come to translate. And she would come on her way to work.
Well, work must have been a strip club because she came with 5 inch platform shoes, low-rise tight pants(with all her stretch marks visible), tiny tank top( with her plastic boobs prominently displayed), 2 inch nails and gaudy make up and hair.
She was 25 years old with a 10 year old child.
I must say she was very respectful and even called me "Professoressa", but it was clear her daughter would never get anywhere in her life.

I've got stories that could fill a book.

Until English becomes the Official Language of the United States, these kids have no chance in life. Obama professed CHANGE in his campaign, let's see if he can Unite Americans by changing the old ways into a New America with people coming together with one language and voice. Think of the money the taxpayers would save. On the local front, politicians, i.e. City Council will NEVER stand behind English as our main language. Once these immigrants learn it, empower themselves, and learn that they have the power to change things, these politicians will be screwed. The politicians won't have any control over these people. They will have learned to think and speak for themselves.

Italian Girl
Was the mothers name Julissa or Angelissa something like that ? Long black straightened hair maybee 5'5 ?

Shes a whore from Jackson Heights who was working Craigslist, also has a 4 year old.
I had (Note had) a girlfried who was teaching in JH. She was threatened by a parent who said she was Un-Professoressa and going to have her gang stab her in her car. I had to LIRR and taxi into that cesspool to drive her car back.

The cops go to the home and find the 10 year old was babysitting the 4 year old with the neighbors 14year old boy (who was passed out on the floor) Now this is wile the mother was out hooking.

All the parents got tossed in the stainless steel crapper.

I don't remember the mother's name. I definitely remember the kid's name. This woman was about 5'5" and did have a great body - perfectly toned. She attracted so much attention in the school yard where I met her that even the kids were staring at her. And everyone was asking me who she was. No one could believe she was a PARENT. And she brought her "boyfriend" who was wearing a tank top and was loaded with gold chains.

But I have to say she was very polite and mad about her daughter's behavior. and the kid's behavior improved, for a while. But I could tell the kid was doomed - already at 10 flirting with boys and dressing sexy. She was left back for the second time that year. I subsequently heard that her mother took her back to Colombia later that year. Apparently they've been moving back and forth.

IG, you are so correct. But, to make it apples to apples a simple change to the public schools is required:

(1) Establish tiers for students, top notch, good, adequate, ... all the way down to uneducatble/disruptive. Each tier in a separate facility. The tender feelings and self-esteem of those in low tiers is of no concern. Being assigned to a low tier should be motivation to perform sufficiently better to be eligible for a higher tier.

(2) Establish laws (imitating the parochial schools) permitting - no, REQUIRING - a student to drop down or rise up to a tier that accommodates the student's abilities.

(3) Prevent non-English speakers to enroll in any school, any grade.

We pay to educate our own citizens' children for them to become equipped to prosper in society. We have no obligation to the children of any other nation. We are NOT practicing religion here. This is a secular society with a secular government.

If the argument is that we DO have such an obligation, the question becomes, what is the obligation of the citizens of all those other nations? To wait for welfare payments from us?

Do citizens of other nations have any obligations of their own to their own fellow citizens?

These kids don't have a chance of a normal life if the parents are children themselves, however, a command of the English language would certainly give them a leg up and help them out later. At least they would be able to fill out a job application and secure employment.

Taxpayer:

1) That's a good concept. But getting teachers to teach in a bottom tier school would be hard unless you threw a lot of money at them and brought in the military for protection. Some students (and their families) are so screwed up, they wouldn't be motivated at all by being in a bottom school. In fact being surrounded by other deliquents would further their downward spiral. They don't have role models at home. So if they don't have them at school either, then there's no hope. The ghetto is an awful place to come from.

2) Going down a tier would be the problem. The kid's mom will likely enlist Al Sharpton to make a lot of noise. And politicians are scared of THAT kind of noise.

3) Wouldn't that be great! It'll never happen unless the US changes their policies on immigration and REALLY closes down borders once and for all. I don't get. Immigrants came from everywhere 100years ago and put their kids in public schools. There was no ESL. They learned. You wouldn't believe how fast ELL (English Language Learners) kids will learn English. Asian kids ability to learn English is incredible. Hispanic kids - not so much.

Until we get over our fear and make english the official language of the USA this will keep happening. We allow people to file for unemployment, food stamps, welfare and health care in other languages in a country where US english should be learned.

Wow the racism here is unreal!

I am a product of ESL public school education in the primary grades and then lived in a Spanish speaking country for 2 years and eventually finished in a parochial school. This afforded me to be fluent in 2 languages and to be able to read and/or write pretty much any romance language. Being bilingual has opened many doors for me professionally.

I do not work as a domestic or serve fast food or any of that other stereo-typical narrow-minded vision people seem to suffer from. There are plenty of immigrant success stories all over if you bother to take the blinders off and really look around.

On to the meat of this post: the problem with public education is not the kids, it's the teachers, the training they don't receive, the concessions they do get, the budgets that are cut, and the low salaries used to lure new talent, etc.

Most teachers, once they have seniority, do not want to teach in urban settings (can't say I blame them because of crime and so forth), but it's not just immigrants committing these crimes. White trash is not lacking anywhere in the US. There are plenty of american born dummies in our school system who either blame the man for their shortcomings or the system...or whatever!

And yes, why do parochial schools succeed? because the parents care because they are paying their own money for it. When things are free, people take them for granted, which is why our overall education rate as a country is dismal and why every immigrant that can get financial aid usually graduates on time and our own american bred spoiled, lazy kids do not!

It's just THAT simple.
