Willets Point businesses heard loud and clear

A group of business owners opposing Mayor Bloomberg's rezoning plan for Willets Point slowed traffic around Shea Stadium before yesterday's Mets game by putting on the streets trucks carrying slogans such as "Hands Off Our Land, Bloomberg!"

Business Owners Send Strong Message on Willets Point

Protesters and public officials at yesterday's rally focused on one aspect of the debate: Even if the proposal is voted down, the mayor's office has not ruled out using the power of eminent domain to take over the land.

"It might sound old-fashioned, but I believe that, in America, the right of property owners is sacred," Council Member Hiram Monserrate, who represents Willets Point, said at the rally.

The vice president of a Willets Point water and sewage product distributor, Thomas Mina, called the mayor's plan a "concept," saying the administration had not made the details of its proposal clear.

"I'm not against development, but let the businesses here take part in it," he said. "If the city would put in infrastructure like sewers and roads, the area would develop itself. Corporations would want to come, there would be none of this perceived unsightliness, and we wouldn't be displaced."

not against development?/ the heresy of it all..

sure.. let the city spend $$ on the infrastructure so Mina and his land barons can sell out at 10x the price to whomever they want.. sounds worse than the mayors plan.

Anonymous said...

Why? It's called free market economy.

Anonymous said...

_________

Oh, and when to Acorn's interests become the same as Willets Point interest?

Anonymous said...

"not against development?/ the heresy of it all.."

What the hell does that mean? The businesses are there in the first place because of development. You really need to get a hobby, dude.

Anonymous said...

He can't help it. He has a blind hatred for anything having to do with Willets Point. He probably wandered away from the Mets game as a child and ended up there and was scarred for life. LOL LOL LOL

Anonymous said...

No. In a free market Mina, his sewer company and his "partners" should buy up the land, put in the sewers themselves and then clean it up and redevelop it.

not ask the city to foot the bill for their gains.

Anonymous said...

If the businesses want to accept the city's offer they will. And then the city can build what they want and then their battle can be with Acorn over affordable housing. Hiram is trying to prevent eminent domain abuse first, and the housing affordability can come after the first issue is settled.

Anonymous said...

Heresy is an introduced change to some system of belief, especially a religion, that conflicts with the previously established canon of that belief.

Mina going against the Queens Crapper creed..

so what do you say when Mina gets his sewers and sells the triangle out to Fed Ex or UPS like he suggested in his video??

Anonymous said...

What about the traffic?

Anonymous said...

"In a free market Mina, his sewer company and his "partners" should buy up the land, put in the sewers themselves and then clean it up and redevelop it.

not ask the city to foot the bill for their gains."

Extremely stupid statement. Mina and his partners already own the land. In this city, sewer systems are the responsibility of the government. He is simply asking for what every other taxpaying business in this city has already gotten - sanitary sewers.

Anonymous said...

traffic is part of life here.. deal with it or move to Wyoming.

Anonymous said...

"traffic is part of life here.. deal with it or move to Wyoming."

Yes, let's not try to fix the problems, let's make them worse.

Anonymous said...

Why the hell would I care if Mina sold his business to UPS or Fedex? They would need sewers, too.

Anonymous said...

"He is simply asking for what every other taxpaying business in this city has already gotten - sanitary sewers."

not true.. other areas have septic systems and no sewer connections. Mina and his land barons bought land that didnt have sewer service and never did. how is that now our problem to GIVE him sewers?

Anonymous said...

"not true.. other areas have septic systems and no sewer connections."

Which ones?

Anonymous said...

if Mina puts in the sewers on his own dime than he should be able to sell to anyone he wants..

so you queens crappers would rather have a massive fed ex complex in WP than a school and 5500 housing units with some shopping and a movie theatre..

good priorities. you must own stock

Anonymous said...

How do more residents in an already crowded borough straining the infrastructure improve life for those already here? I'd rather have the jobs that Fedex would provide.

Anonymous said...

Okay, let's put the sewer issue aside. How about fixing the damn streets, installing sidewalks? Is that Mina's responsibility too?

Anonymous said...

there are some areas where three families share a one bedroom apartment.. there is a housing crisis.

i know must on this site would like to cesseed from the union and set up a separate immigration plan for queens but that aint reality so get with the program or move somewhere that there are less people.

Anonymous said...

how about Douglaston? they have septic// do you all really believe the WP rhetoric that they are the ONLY area of NYC without connex to the sewer system.

lemmings.

streets and sidewalks? the area has never had much paved streets and certainly there are areas without sidewalks in NYC.

Anonymous said...

I repeat: He is simply asking for what every other taxpaying business in this city has already gotten - sanitary sewers.

Douglas Manor is a very expensive residential community.

Please name the other business communities in NYC without sanitary sewers.

Anonymous said...

"streets and sidewalks? the area has never had much paved streets."

And why not? What good reason does the city have for not paving the streets like it does everywhere else?

Anonymous said...

"there are some areas where three families share a one bedroom apartment.. there is a housing crisis."

And 80% of units that are luxury apartments or hotel rooms are going to fix that? Oh my God you need to get a grip on what you are saying. The people living 3 families to a one-bedroom are not going to be the ones moving here. Stop drinking the Bloomberg Koolaid and just admit you want a place to get drunk after the game and before you board the LIRR.

Anonymous said...

For years Willets Point has been the asshole of Queens.

Nobody wanted it and the city never cared what the hell went on there.

Now that we're running out of land
there's a desperate attempt to build on any shit pile that can be found so that developers can bilk a fortune off of local or foreign Chinese/Taiwanese buyers (in this case) who've got no problem living on top of a toxic wasteland!
Living conditions might have been far worse in their own homelands.

Muss is already doing exactly that on the eastern bank of the Flushing River. That's a federal brown field
he's building over!

Anonymous said...

So that is your next big dumb argument against cleaning up this area - traffic?? Traffic? We should keep a blighted disgusting mess because if we clean it up we will have more traffic? You all need to get your heads out of the sand.
Isn't one of your arguments that the city should just put in streets and sewers so the existing businesses can do their own redevelopment? Wouldn't that increase traffic too?

Anonymous said...

Like how you are going to find every Willets Point post and leave the same comments. Should give you something to do all day, because there's a lot of them.

Anonymous said...

In any large project, the effects of traffic have to be weighed and mitigated. There is already way too much traffic on the highway and on Roosevelt Avenue. The buses, trains and subways are packed. More luxury condos (next to an airport - LOL) is not what we need right now. And until the sanctuary city policy stops, a handful of "affordable" apartments isn't what we need either. The illegals will continue occupy basements 10 to a room in shifts just like they do now.

Anonymous said...

That area is already a transportation bottleneck...that's why you moron.

Just witness the traffic when a Mets game breaks up....a veritable nightmare!

It will be NOTHING compared to the increased congestion resulting from this ill thought project.

Notice that I didn't say PLAN because there are no specifics on paper.

So we're being told to buy a pig in a poke.

You must be the dumbest businessman in the world if you'd go for a blind deal like that.

DON'T EXPECT US TO BUY IT !!!

Anonymous said...

There was no great interest or haste in "cleaning up" that area for the public good for almost one hundred years or so.

Funny how quickly the grease gets applied to the wheels when Wilpon and Muss have interests in the area!

Stop trying to jerk us around with your skewed arguments and twisted logic "Parkside"!

Hiram is trying to prevent eminent domain abuse first, and the housing affordability can come after the first issue is settled.
------

Hiram is trying to get reeelected first and last. 'Affordable housing' means that he has the 'right' people in his district.

Like any politican, who could give 2 sh*ts on anything else like eminent domain.

Lets face it, every other arguement is over except the shouting.

Like the West Bank (today) and Bloody Kansas (in history)

Its about who gets to settle the distict with their supporters - Flushing or Corona.

Acorn is seen as a bad guy in Ratnerville Brooklyn.

In Queens its a viable option if not a downright savior for an area (and whose ramifications and reputation, are, of couse, unexplored by the press)

Speaks volumes about community preservation and civic activism in Queens.

It effectively does not exist.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, it is foolhardy to develop the Iron Triangle for any type of housing. Whatever happened to the sewer overflow tank? The area is still putrid at times, especially at low tide. The smell is unacceptable. Why would any sane person want to live there in the first place?

And let us not forget the overhead jet traffic consistently taking off and landing. It's not just the noise but the toxic soup of pollution from both vehicular traffic and those aircraft, as well as industrial smog. The 5,500 residential units proposed for the area is an affront to anyone living nearby.

Over the last few days, the Whitestone Expressway (both north and south) has been a parking lot at times. I look out my apartment window and see emergency vehicles trying to weave through this mess while responding to a call. How is this development going to solve that issue???

One of the most glaring omissions to any proposal for the area is the lack of an environmental study of the air quality at and adjacent to the Willets Point area. Is the City's proposal going to have a negative health impact on the people of North Queens? I guess we'll never know if Granny Shulman and the Parkside Pals have their way.

I say follow the money trail and see how much taxpayer money was spent so far and where did the money go? Private money? If so, how much? Whose pants pockets are getting fat off of our collective butts? It is time to get serious and stop wasting taxpayer time and money!!!!! I agree that it is time for a federal investigation to see what is really going on here.

I have an idea,

The JPCA did a great job at saving that one - NOT.

Fucking assholes!!!"

Are you actually proud of the fact that JPCA couldn't preserve the structure and land on the St Saviour's site? In spite of the will of the people? It says a lot about your motivation and who you are.
With a little forethought the city could have purchased the property and designated it parkland. That was done frequently during the 1930's through the 1960's.
Now it wants to confiscate private land that is and always has been zoned for industrial and do who knows what with it. Taking jobs that support entry level positions with it. This is not planning, it is theft. Not only towards the owners of those properties, but the taxpayer.

Anonymous said...

so imagine that.. an area of NYC without sewers is NOT blighted but is actually a very expensive valuable piece of land....

guess that kills the WP argument that the lack of sewers is the reason the place is blighted.

Anonymous said...

Mina said there is "perceived unsightliness"? "Perceived"? Wow these people are so full of crap.

I'm so glad this project is moving forward. Crown signing on is a big step, I think the development is just about past the point of no return, thank goodness.

Anonymous said...

Really? How can we be past the point of no return before the city council votes, before a developer is chosen (hell, they haven't even bid yet), before we even know how extensive contamination is and before the vast majority of businesses have been offered a deal?

Pie in the sky, folks.

Anonymous said...

the WPIRA is falling apart at the seams.. the absentee slumlords will soon face condemnation and their tenant serfs will be given a real place to conduct their business.

as far as Im concerned this is the best project in the city. anything would be better than the chop shops on 126th and willets point blvd.

Anonymous said...

"anything would be better than the chop shops on 126th and willets point blvd"

Only to a Mets fan. The rest of us don't care. Those businesses need to be somewhere, and on an isolated piece of land is better than next to a neighborhood.

Anonymous said...

Correction: Only a selfish Mets fan who wants to hang out in bars after the game cares.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it sad how McShane and his prick buddies come here and talk condescendingly about the people who work at the Point? What a bunch of losers these whiny Mets fans are. Couldn't even put together a counter protest. Why? Because the vast majority of Mets fans know those businesses were there before the Mets. It's not their fault that Wilpon wanted to build the stadium right next to the triangle this time.

Anonymous said...

mve the businesses to an industrial area .. NOT next to the largest park in NYC

If you think that only a few Mets fans want Willet Point cleaned up, then you really are narrow-minded and clueless. Just about everyone I know and hear from, except for the NIMBYs on this blog, are looking forward to getting the junkards and the mess out and getting something nice built there.

What an obtuse comment. I believe that everyone agrees that the site needs cleaning up. The issue is stealing property from private owners so that the Mayor's buddies can profit. Another issue is quality of life for existing residents of the borough. Get a life!!!

Anonymous said...

no one is stealing anything.. ask jerry antonacci.

Unknown said...

The business owners can slow traffic but they cannot slow the steady move forward being made by the city toward the goal of redeveloping Willets Point. The owners themselves, including Jerry Antonacci, have commented that they have been treated well. In fact Jerry mentioned he hopes the other owners are treated as well as he has been.

Anonymous said...

if you really cared about the "quality of life for existing residents of the borough" you'd be for this project.

of course you dont really care about adding 5500 units of housing in a borough where people like 2 and three familes to an apartment.

why dont you say you want to keep queens as an archie bunker haven.

Anonymous said...

I happen to live in Councilman John Liu's district. Since he has been in office, entire areas of North Flushing have been developed for residential use. Blocks of one family homes have been replaced by apartment buildings. This is taking place in an area where the infrastructure was not prepared to handle this much development.

Schools already have inadequate seating capacities and the electrical grid, sewer systems, etc. are at maximum capacity. This is the north side of Northern Boulevard. On the other side, the same thing is happening.

As I write this missive, I have been watching bumper to bumper traffic on the southbound Whitestone Expressway. And as I already mentioned, emergency vehicles cannot navigate through what currently exists. The traffic tie up has been going on since early this morning.

If people are living in such cramped conditions, as you suggest, it is their responsibilty to find more suitable living quarters. We are squeezing too many people into an area that is already facing overcrowding issues. I am espousing a point of view shared by many of my neighbors who would like to see their rights protected as well.

Of course, calling me "Archie Bunker" is a convenient way to make your point. Unfortunately, it could not be further from the truth. You failed to address the points that I made in my previous comment, specifically about environmental stresses to the borough!!!

Anonymous said...

Too bad they all live on Long Island and have no input into what goes on in NYC. And if there are so many of them, why can't they put together a counter protest and show their numbers?

Because there is no groundswell of support for eminent domain to remove these businesses.

Hey Crappy-

Queens Crap

A website focused on the overdevelopment and "tweeding" of the borough of Queens in the City of New York

Ridgewoodian said...

Say, how many people were at this protest? The article doesn't say, and the photo only seems to show a couple dozen, if that many. Anyone know?

Anonymous said...

Tweeders always care about numbers. If it was 50, they say that's pathetic. If it's 200, they say someone got paid.

Concentrate on this instead: No one came out on the other side with a counterprotest, and not for lack of trying.

Anonymous said...

overdevelopment - code word for building housing for people that dont look like archie bunker (our hero) and are less fortunate than "us"

tweeding - code word for people who do not act like archie bunker(our hero)but look like us and have more money than us. beware of these people.

Anonymous said...

quite frankly most of the pro development crowd doesnt care to hear Hiram spout his rhetoric out of both sides of his mouth because once the plan passes he'll be handing out fliers in the new WP asking for votes.

and pro development people are not averse to the anti development people making fools of themselves while bringing attention to their mess.

Anonymous said...

Overdevelopment means promoting building even though an area's infrastructure can't handle it. This usually happens in areas inhabited primarily by people of color, but is happening increasingly in other areas as well.

Tweeding politicians keep people's votes by making them dependent on their handouts. Minorities are typically the targets of this abuse, which only makes their situation worse in the long run. Of course "affordable housing" has been driving the debate over whether anything should be built at Willets Point. Affordable housing is usually not clearly defined, there is never enough available since we lose existing affordable housing on a daily basis, and those who advocate for it usually end up getting shut out of it.

It's called using and abusing, and Queens Crap is one of the few outlets that call attention to the fact that this is happening.

If you don't like us pointing out the blatant racism of these policies, move to Kansas.

Anonymous said...

Do tell me julie-

are areas where you live defined by the color of the people who live there???

Is this 1948 or 2008?

And according to you minorities are the primary beneficiaries of handouts??? Wow.. Make my point a little more obvious

affordable housing is always very clearly defined by income levels without regard to "skin color

So what's in Kansas that I should move there??

It's called masking your racial hatred in buzzwords..and it stinks more than willets point

Anonymous said...

People of color is a perfectly acceptable term to use in this day and age. The antiquated term you are thinking of is "colored people" which is now considered to be derogatory.

Yes, minorities are the primary beneficiaries of handouts. That's why the politicians continue to tweed them. It's a vicious cycle. Did you not notice that ACORN is made up almost exclusively of blacks and hispanics?

"affordable housing is always very clearly defined by income levels"

What are the income levels and who determines them? The income levels always seem on the high side. That's because they don't want to face the monumental task of having to market luxury condos where there are people living that the yuppies might consider "undesirable". Those are the real racists. The people you want to see move in here.

Affordable housing? All housing is affordable to someone out there. The term is a joke.

NAACP= Negroes Are Actually Colored Polacks

Testifying against the project was Michael Gerrard, an environmental lawyer representing the Willets Point Industry and Realty Association

obviously non biased with no dog in the fight.

The mayor's been saying we'll have a million more people in this city by 2030 for 2 years now.

so is it one million or "Millions" as you contended before. and we are talking over 20 years from now which isnt a huge growth rate.

Were all the ACORN protesters there that day black and hispanic? It certaiinly looked that way from the photos. Can we not then assume that the rest of the membership is as well?

again.. what relevance is the racial make up of ACORN in the discussion other than to satiate your racial fears and prejudices.

Anonymous said...

When did anyone here say "millions" besides you?

Anonymous said...

No one did. Ignore him, he obviously can't read or comprehend basic words.

Anonymous said...

and your assumption that the racial profile of 20 protesters represents the racial makeup of 350,000 members is flawed.

but thats besides the point..

there were some white women as i recall..

but im sure you characterize them as welfare mothers who have no right having children if they cant afford it.

"but im sure you characterize them as welfare mothers who have no right having children if they cant afford it."

no, that's actually what you said when you were asked about a single mother with 2 kids who makes $35,000 per annum not being able to afford to live at Willets Point.

Anonymous said...

the point of the comment stands .. one million added people in 20 years is a minimal growth rate..

Anonymous said...

you are obviously missing or refuse to acknowledge the points .. which proves you have no argument..

Anonymous said...

I believe in the old saying, "Never argue with a moron - first he'll pull you down to his level, then beat you with experience!" You are proving that with each comment since you keep avoiding simple direct questions and try to divert the subject to things that are totally irrelevant.

"one million added people in 20 years"

Also has no historical precedent, but why bring that up.

Thanks for a completely stupid analogy comparing a hypothetical low-income single mother who wants an entitlement to live wherever she wants to the Mets and the city working together for the Mets to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new stadium, injecting money, creating jobs and improving the community.

"...to the Mets and the city working together for the Mets to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build a new stadium, injecting money, creating jobs and improving the community."

Ha! Ha! Ha! I believe you meant the developers' are going to clean up at taxpayers expense. How is the "communtiy" going to improve because there is a new stadium when the old one could have been renovated? How are the people of Queens and the rest of the metropolitan area going to benefit with 12,000 seats removed and ticket prices raised by 79%?

Everybody knows that the KKK uses colorfully patterned Martha Stewart designer series sheets these days
(ha, ha, ha).

Your Klan parody is humorless
and falls a little flat.

Just another feeble attempt at diversion from some of the truthful analysis that's appearing in many of the comments posted here.

(Sounds like Parkside's speed).

You'll never cut it even as a third rate stand up comic Evan.

Give it up.
Big mamma will maintain you on your weekly allowance
(a drop in the bucket from that vast Stavisky war chest).

Oops...now you've challenged Evan and he's off to his favorite haunt
the "Spy Shop"(if it's still in business) for some state of the art snooping or hacking devices.

You'd all better make sure your
computers have a good firewall!

Toby & Son are f-----g pissed now that Peter Koo has the upper hand.

They'll stop at nothing now.

Considering that ACORN's roots are in the old Communist Party of the United States, hearing them talk about the inalienable rights of property owners always gives me a good giggle.

Now that the 40-year program to drive manufacturing of the city is about completed, how do you find a job for a guy whose only skill is cutting up a stolen car for parts?

Oh F--K this all!

An owner has the right to squeeze
a buyer and get what he wants for his property without being forced out through eminent domain abuse!

Wilpon can just raise the price of his expensive corporate sky boxes to cover any property purchase overages.

A game is being played here that has nothing to do with baseball!

Enough already!

If anyone thought they were going to grab this land for peanuts
had best go and consult with the squirrels!

sorry .. a thousand years of history says this is completely wrong.. wanna try again with a different premise?

Taking private land and giving it to private developers has not been going on for 1000 years. I'd hate to have had your history teacher.
