Mishmash mess in Woodside

When construction is happening on BQE ramps, traffic gets backed up on the available approaches. But that's ok, you get to enjoy the scenery longer. These twin lovelies are on 69th Street in Woodside just north of 41st Ave. Besides matching paved-over lawns, they have matching graffiti. But what's really striking about this vibrant, diverse corner of the borough are the patchwork walls of the houses. You can tell these folks have real pride in their homes.

I'll bet those are rentals. And if that's the case, it's typical of the way slumlords take care of their properties.

You are right there. Take a look at photographs in the city archvies back in the 30s when they were owner occupied.

Now today with absentee landlords.

Funny how the preservation community doesn't address this blight.

But they do have plenty of seminars on living with NYC2030.

That is because, dear boy, members of the 'preservation community' are slum landlords themselves.

Its one thing to landmark your community in Manhattan, its someting quite different to buy an 'investment property' in Queens.

Sort of explains why they really don't care.

Isn't it possible it is owner occupied, but that the owner doesn't have the funds to fix it up right now?

I mean, surely the house would have been bought cheaper than a house in better condition, perhaps that was all they could afford.

Possibly, but the graffiti leads one to believe that the owner does not live there. An owner wouldn't tolerate that sh#@ on his property.

If you have $800,000 to buy a shack, you have money for salt on the sidewalk in winter, garbage bags for the trash, lightbulbs for the hall, and ONE BOTTLE of grafitti remover or a pint of paint.

If not, you should not be buying a building and creating a hazard for your tenants, the public, and fellow property owners.

It's amazing how jaded some people's opinions are. These posters that can't believe that a homeowner may barely be making his mortgage payments and should have a few spare thousands to repair the property probably never had to struggle themselves.

Shame on you.

Guess what? Upkeep of a house is something that you factor into buying a house. If you can't afford it, maybe you shouldn't buy it.

Sorry, there's no excuse for your house looking like a pig sty.

People who inherit houses can also be lazy and neglectful, too, even if they live in them. It's possible you have two elderly building owners who just don't care anymore, I think it is more common than we can really know.

Considering how many people are now struggling to make their monthly payments and can barely make ends meet, that comment, while overall true, when it is applied to this posting, is just plain arrogant and ignorant.

Pratt and Hunter, instead of doing prodevelopment studies, should be doing studies on why property like this is in decline.

The city wide preseration community should be demanding it.

It's so sad that our laws are not enforced. IT IS ILLEGAL to pave over a garden and make an illegal curb cut to drive a car onto the sidewalk.

This is law. But try and tell this to our corrupt DOB and our local politicians who DO NOTHING about code violations like this.

These houses should be ticketed DAILY until the owners are forced to fix these code violations, repair the curbs, put back their fences and PLANT A DAMN TREE!

Only in New York Shitty, this is tolerated by the government agencies. Anywhere else in this country, this BLIGHT would have been nipped in the bud by people who actually CARE about their neighborhoods.

This looks like a slum. I don't care if the owner lives there or not. It's a slum.

So we are to believe that they had enough money to pave over their gardens to make driveways for the cars they are pumping $4+/gallon into but they can't afford to fix up their house? LOL!!!

Boy, when some people get their minds set in one direction, their responses get really idiotic.

You can't possibly imagine that the concrete work was done, say, 6 or 7 years ago, when gas was a helluvalot cheaper, when the economy was better for a lot of people? Maybe that "garden" had been paved over 20 years ago and it was a mess and the homeowner scraped enough together to have it redone just a few years ago. Open your mind to some new things, stop being so close-minded, you're like a child with these thoughts.

Satellite photos from last year show the one on the right, which looks worse than the one on the left, had not yet been paved.
