Crown Container takes City's offer

From the Times Ledger:

One of the most outspoken business owners in the fight to redevelop Willets Point has signed an agreement with the city to relocate his business to western Queens.

Jerry Antonacci, owner of Crown Container Co., told the TimesLedger Wednesday that he signed off on a deal that would move his waste transfer business to Maspeth if the city's redevelopment plans are approved by the City Council. Antonacci, a member of the Willets Point Industry and Real Estate Association, had been one of the most vocal critics of the Economic Development Corporation's ongoing negotiations with business owners in the area.

"We worked through a lot of stuff. I feel confident moving forward," he said. "They offered me a really good deal."

Antonacci said despite the agreement, he is still adamantly against the use of eminent domain to acquire property at Willets Point.

"Even though I made the deal, I still feel passionately about that," he said. "I do not want to see eminent domain used on any of the businesses here."

The proposed site is located on 48th Street near Grand Avenue in an M3 district at English Kills.

HOLY CRAP!

Jerry , say it ain't so.

Just goes to show that despite the anonymous pig that comes here and comments, the owners react reasonably when given a reasonable offer.

just goes to show that despite the rantings of the anti development zealots in this space the city is committed to finding solutions for the WP business owners..

so suck it

Just goes to show that in order to get the city to pony up, you need to protest and get the plan threatened by the city council. THEN and only then do they step up.

it's never getting built. it's going to be a boondoggle. paying out all this money and the land will stay barren. just like what happened on the LES and with Kelo.

Yeah the Queens biddies certainly soiled their Depends. Notice how fast they moved after that happened.

"I just hope the deal they presented me with, they present to all the business owners," he said. "If they do, I feel like this plan could move forward."

its happening folks.. time for the anti development zealots to throw themselves in the sludge pits as protest..

of course that'll never happen cause you all really dont care enough..

hey.. how many were at the presser today on 126th street..?? was Crown and their garbage truck sign there? Ha ha..

How is the traffic situation going to be handled? Does anyone have an answer to this?

Anonymous said...

Wow 5 whole businesses said okay to the city! Only 250 more to go!

Anonymous said...

No, they have no answer to the traffic problem. They can't point to their EIS because even that says it's going to be hell.

there are 20 landowners who run businesses.. 4 have accepted offers

there are 50 slum landlords who rent to the chop shops one has accepted.. the others will follow soon because they are the big polluters

there are 240 tenant businesses in auto relateed that are being moved all at once..

the end is near zealots.

Anonymous said...

"there are 240 tenant businesses in auto relateed that are being moved all at once.."

To where?

Anonymous said...

someplace these important small businessmen can serve their customers safely and flourish..as we found out with crown there are lots of appropriate places.

Of course you all are just worried that it isn't near your backyard.

Anonymous said...

How can 24 businesses be "moved all at once"?

Anonymous said...

What about the traffic?

Anonymous said...

Excuse me, I meant 240 businesses.

Anonymous said...

They will all fall like dominos.

Anonymous said...

What about the traffic?

Anonymous said...

the 240 are all renters.. give them a place where they can have an equity stake and they'll fall in line

Anonymous said...

traffic where? its not like they're putting Xanadu or some amusement park or Mall of America there..

Anonymous said...

The traffic that the EDC says will result and what the $5M traffic mitigation fund would be for.

Anonymous said...

"Most at the meeting agreed that adding two ramps off the Van Wyck Expressway will not be enough to mitigate traffic problems, which already exist."

THAT traffic.

Anonymous said...

"traffic where? its not like they're putting Xanadu or some amusement park or Mall of America there.."

No, they're just putting in a convention center next to a bunch of stadiums, shops and apartment buildings. That shouldn't cause traffic! LOL LOL LOL

Anonymous said...

they are talking about a 6%(weekdays) to 9%(weekends)rise in volumes in the area. vs a 1% rise without the plan.

any good plan should have a fund set aside to study and mitigate traffic issues..

Anonymous said...

Traffic is at a standstill now on the highways there. Can't wait for 6% more during rush hour.

Anonymous said...

Traffic issues should be addressed before development, not after.

This is great news, and another step forward in cleaning up the disgusting mess of Willets Point.

Anonymous said...

"The EDC acknowledged that it had not studied the possible economic impact of relocation for the 260 businesses at Willets Point. One land owner quoted a national study which revealed that 98% of businesses relocated as a result of eminent domain are forced out of business within 5 years.

The committee agreed that the EDC's proposed $5 million 'Traffic Mitigation Fund' to offset any unforeseen costs in the future was an exceptionally low number and would need to be significantly increased.

The existing severe traffic congestion in Willets Point and Flushing was discussed. Traffic and transit mitigation is an important issue to the Community Board and the EDC's continued lack of substantive solutions is problematic to many committee members as they prepare to vote."

maybe people will start using public transportation and leave the gas guzzlers at home.

Anonymous said...

maybe we should just give all the land back to the indians and go back where we came from.

Anonymous said...

If you have driven through that area. and you are conscious, you do understand that mega development would make WP a Wretched Place.

Anonymous said...

So that is your next big dumb argument against cleaning up this area - traffic?? Traffic? We should keep a blighted disgusting mess because if we clean it up we will have more traffic? You all need to get your heads out of the sand.
Isn't one of your arguments that the city should just put in streets and sewers so the existing businesses can do their own redevelopment? Wouldn't that increase traffic too?

Anonymous said...

Dingleberry - traffic is one of the factors that needs to be addressed whether you and the EDC like it or not.

"Seig Heil", proclaims Frau Shulman with great zeal!

Time to put on your red white and black arm band grandma.

"Un dis plan vill never die"!

(As the overture to "Die Walkure"
plays softly, but triumphantly, in the background).

Now lets resurrect Albert Spear to
design a massive neo classical complex on the "iron triangle"to compliment "Citi Fields"!

(And an iron cross for Claire).

The ghost of the minister of propaganda Herr Goebbels silently walks among the "Parkside Group".

Private property rights?....bah!
That just ended with the new order.

"Please show us your identity papers"?

"You say you left them home"?

"Take them in for questioning
to local politzei headquarters"!

Now I did it.
I can hear the heavy fist of the Gestapo pounding on my front door.

There are no houses by Newtown Creek. It's all industrial.

Is that the part of Maspeth where NYPD tows your car? Had that happen once. Totally sucks. And the lot, under the highways, is a disgrace, and it's amazing they don't find bodies from the Castellano wars buried there.

Maybe Crown can arrange to put
D.P Gallagher into a hot pink painted 50 gallon drum with 3
100 proof Xs stenciled on it.

I'm getting tired of that drunken pink grandma raping prick posting
his lame comments on QC !

Stop drinking and popping Viagra
and get yourself a real life away from being tied to Parkside!

But maybe you're too busy porking Evan.

Rumor has it that he likes it
