Slavery still around in 2008 Queens

Meet the mini-madam.

Consuelo Carreto Valencia is 4-feet-10 and looks harmless enough.

But federal prosecutors say she's the meanspirited matriarch of a sex trafficking ring that smuggled dozens of young, uneducated Mexican women to Queens for a nightmare of prostitution, rape and forced abortions.

"The victims were compelled to live under strict control ... and were required to engage in prostitution under exhausting, degrading and demoralizing conditions," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Monica Ryan.

Valencia, 59, goes on trial Monday in Brooklyn Federal Court, where she will face the victims who were lured from their impoverished towns with false promises of prosperity, love and marriage in the United States.

Instead, they found themselves enslaved inside filthy cubicles furnished with little more than cots and sex lubricants, according to court papers.

Ordered to work more than 12 hours a day and charging $25 to $35 per sex act, the women kept virtually none of their earnings and were beaten if they were caught trying to send some money to their families in Mexico.

"South of the border,
Down Mexico way.
That's where I fell in love
When stars above came out to play.
She whispered manana
But I couldn't stay.
South of the border,
Down Mexico way."

Mamacita! Arrrriba! Ai-yai-yai-yay!

Pretty soon Consuela Valencia will be singing these lyrics in prison:

I wish I was in Tijuana,
Eating barbecued iguana

So they did keep SOME of their earnings.
