The state's environmental agency has started work on a study to assess the environmental impact of ground-up tires used in modern synthetic turf fields.Department of Environmental Conservation officials said Wednesday that the agency took up the issue after state lawmakers raised concerns about potentially toxic and carcinogenic components -- such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc -- in the rubber crumbs that cushion the fields. Some fear that the chemicals may leach into groundwater or vaporize into inhalable gases.

Let's pray the State can over ride the City.
Anyone who is reading this post can easily write to the mayor telling him to remove all artificial turf and purchase no more.
We do run the city after all.
So we can override any decision we don't like.
Why dont they go to Chicoppee Mass and see how many people have cancer in that town. They had a Goodyear Tire factory in the 60's.
This is so disturbing, how many playgrounds have padding made out ground tires. Our publicly funded day care does!
