Online shoppers could soon be paying sales taxes as part of the new state budget being negotiated by Gov. Paterson and the Legislature.
Lawmakers are considering a proposal first pushed by disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer to require out-of-state companies like Amazon.com to charge New York state and local sales taxes the same way New York companies online must.
Spitzer had estimated the change would raise $47 million.
Critics and even some supporters expect legal challenges, citing a 1992 US Supreme Court ruling they say prohibits a state from forcing a company with no physical presence in a state from collecting the state's sales tax.

Great job Patterson.
If you can't think of a way to raise money for the state then just take more of it from us taxpayers.
I guess this is why you're in politics and not in the business world.
Maybe it was better to have Spitzer f--k around with his high end whores
(who he could well afford)
than to have our new Guv f--k around with our pocketbooks!
A pol is a pol is a pol!
I think the 47 million is a gross exageration, I for one, would refrain from purchasing many items.
