The latest crane inspection news

A former state employee certified more than 200 unqualified crane operators, according to an investigative report released Wednesday.

Inspector General Kristine Hamann said more than 200 people were certified between 1985 and 2000 despite failing the practical exam to be a crane operator.

She said the member of the state Crane Operating Examining Board who provided the bogus certifications has since been removed from his $82,000-a-year job.

So what's NYC to do?

Private contractors to inspect cranes

The city Department of Buildings, under pressure to inspect about 250 construction cranes around the city, said in a statement to The Real Deal that it will use private contractors to augment its staff of inspectors. A department review of the cranes, which began after the March 15 crane collapse that killed seven people in Turtle Bay, is slated to be completed by the end of May. The sweep of the cranes and a more intensive inspection regimen has strained the seven city inspectors assigned to the task.
