Waste not want not

Hundreds of new or slightly used books were tossed into a Dumpster outside of a Queens middle school early Friday, outraging staff members who can't believe the waste.

Queens' Intermediate School 73 angers staff over tossed books

Several garbage bags filled with copies of classic literature like "Little Women," "Sarah, Plain and Tall" and "Treasure Island" were discarded in a Dumpster alongside Intermediate School 73 in Maspeth.

"Those books, you open them up, they still crack, they're so new," one staffer said. "Why not give them away or hold a book drive at least?"

The hardcover books, including "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" and "Kidnapped," appeared new or slightly used, but were nonetheless stuffed into black garbage bags and thrown into the trash.

The Nazis burned books.
Our Board of Ed just tosses them in a dumpster!

Keep our kids dumb so they'll grow up
to be perfect fodder for the Queens clubhouse!

Welcome a new generation of the tweeded !

Soon printed books (as we know them)
will become obsolete.

Each kid will have his own cheap electronic notebook
that will be programed with the course of study.

Ever try to thumb back to re-read a page
on your PC laptop with a dead battery ?

That's progress, I suppose!

Which idiot at the school was responsible for this? If you sold them for 50 cents apiece you could have raised more money than a bake sale.

To keep these books for several more years would risk losing the kickbacks from textbook publishers' sales of new books to the schools each year.

C'mon, Think about this from the insiders' view. They need money, too.

And, hell, anyway, It's just tax money. So, who cares?

They threw out the inappropriate Eurocentric books such as "Little Woman" and "Treasure Island" to make way for the new all inclusive, multicultural books such as "Heather Has Two Mommies" and "The Wisdom of Jeremiah Wright"
