To hell with the "sitting" area. Plant some nice trees, butterfly bushes, and coneflowers.Add a pretty fountain with some water. This could at least attract some birds and butterflies. Endangered species need every square inch they can get. New York is on a major bird migration route. Amazing things show up in Astoria. I have seen warblers, hummingbirds and pheasants here.

It's a misprint. They left out the "h"
NYC has learned that their altruistic intent
to provide benches didn't work very well
with our increasingly uncivilized population.
They often get alternative uses like:
3rd world moms' diaper changing stations;
derelicts' toilets; drug dealers marketplaces; etc.
Street furniture provides opportunity!
