So much for building a stable community.

Instead, Queens has become a community of stables.

Just like the old days. Take on borders. Live in basements. Sleep in shifts. Desperate immigrants getting exploited at work.

Don't you like the new Queens that the clubhouse has built for us?

It sounds to me mostly like students and other folks who are away on winter break and vactions. You're gone, someone else wants to stay in a place that isn't just some bland hotel in the middle of touristville, so you make some extra money to pay your crazy rent. This is common in major cities around the world. Calm down. (Except, of course, that last guy - he's just creepy.)

This happens year round and is illegal. Case closed.

I love one of the previous responses. "Well, it's common throughout major cities throughout the world"

Smoking everywhere in public is common throughout the rest of the world, too.

This is New York. The "they do it elsewhere" defense won't get you very far.

This reminds me of years ago when I was vagabonding my way around the Greek Isles - going by ferry from one island locale to the next. Quite idyllic! As soon as the ferry boat came into the harbor slip, it was surrounded by Greek woman shouting at the travellers: "Rooms! Rooms!" They literally grabbed you as you came off the boat, took your luggage in one hand and you by the other and escorted you to their nearby homes where, in those days, they charged you about $5/night for a very clean room with bed and washing facilities.

Ah yes. The sweet memories of youth.

calm down people. yes it is done around the world, and technically it is LEGAL. Yes, it is legal here too. A room is being rented out or a bed, whatever. Don't get your knickers in a bunch just because you think Queens is being overrun by a bunch of people illegally occupying houses(which happens also) And the smoking metaphor os lame Craphead.

Nope, renting out a residence as a hotel is illegal, renting out your basement is illegal, you need a C of O to open a hotel, and an approved fire safety plan and you need to charge hotel tax.

Can you say occupancy tax.

"yes it is done around the world, and technically it is LEGAL."

There are many ignorant people in the city and this is why these problems exist.

It's not legal to rent out your house as a hotel. Are you nuts?

Read this:

Is Your New York Hotel Legal?

the last guy, offering a $45 room specifically for a white or asian woman with a photo to forward, is basically looking for a prostitute or "two-bit ho."

no wait, scratch that, the renter seems to be a woman herself...but why would she be asking for a photo of the prospective temp tenant then, in addition to specifying a nationality?

Take a good look at your home owner's or renter's insurance BEFORE you decide to break the law
by renting to strangers.

You are allowed to have ONLY FAMILY MEMBERS occupy your home....
including visiting relatives or friends.

If you are renting to somebody
(either as a hotel, B&B or sublet)
and a fire destroys your residence.....
your policy becomes NULL & VOID and
you will NOT be covered for that loss.

That means YOU will pay for the damages
NOT the insurance company!

An illegal dollar earned could mean thousands lost.

Insurance adjusters are pretty savvy
when it comes to fraud and cover ups.

Anon #5....you're totally off base....
technically or otherwise....IT'S ILLEGAL....
PERIOD.....ask any lawyer!

Also ask the FDNY
who just cleared out two houses
in my area where the owners
were ILLEGALLY renting rooms
(forbidden in a residential neighborhood)
without a proper C of O,
secondary means of egress
or proper fire protection.

We're not living in the 5 Points of the 1840s!

Look up the holder of the mortgage on line....
of any residential property that's being illegally used
as a hotel....and notify the bank or lending agency.

THAT VIOLATES the terms of the mortgage contract
and the lender may PULL the mortgage !

It beats standing there with your thumb up your ass
waiting for DOB to do something about it !

Wow - what a racist: if only my wife would not object having girls in a full size bed, I wouldn't charge a dime and like all pretty girls of any stripes or color!

Anonymous said...

This is happening all over the City. Probably more so in Manhattan.

of course the DOB and other city agencies would never bother to make use of posted rental ads like these to crack down on illegal residential hotels, which endanger the lives of the occupants. Much better that they gingerly cruise about nabes in patrol cars cluelessly seeking signs of illegal occupancy.

Now were talking real solutions!
Egress is key reason why illegally renting rooms or adding rented basement apartment is forbidden - people die if they cannot escape a fire. Steel bars on windows and doors, no second door to flee through are criteria that CO consider. Another major item is having a kitchen in the basement which is commonly rented out. A low ceiling and windows of a certain height are another factor. If an inspection is made of most of the single family homes that were issued a CO in the last 4 years in Elmhurst, Middle Village and Maspeth were to be conducted today, 50% would be found to be non-compliant or in serious violation.

Remember the "Happyland"
fire tragedy in the Bronx some years back?

There was no secondary means of fire egress
in that social club....so people roasted!

A lot of "clubs" (gambling dens etc.) in Flushing
don't follow this FDNY requirement!

A fireman told me that he had inspected
an Asian restaurant on Main St.
that was storing enough propane gas
cylinders in the basement
to "take out the whole block" if they ever exploded!

Nice....nother cultural contribution
from our eastern "neighbors" !

Slumming at its best!
