AM-NY visits the Rockaways

AM-NY took a stroll through the Rockaways this week. Looks like I'll have to get down there soon.

Yawn.....that styro-foam Euro-stucco Disneyland
"architecture" is becoming an epidemic.
Its cheap looks abound everywhere you set your foot !

Hey....wait a minute....
don't be so hasty to put this down.

Just look at all that railing space.
I can hang a whole wash load on that.

My dryer is on the blink.

I like the pinkish one on the right.

No.....don't tell me that one belongs to Pinky !

Structures as unique and imaginative as trout.

The old, falling-down bungalow shacks were far more attractive.

Yes, they are horrible, but better than the vacant lots full of garbage and feces I used to have to walk past when going to the beach 20 years ago. Even my mother, who hates ugly buildings, was impressed that something small got built there.

Mom and I recently went back to the beach at 105th Street after many years of going to Long Beach exclusively. Still very easy to get to the Rockaways via the Q53 across from the Queens Center Mall, which no longer charges express bus fare! Now, just the regular MetroCard fare! Yay!

I don't think the decrepit bungalows were in shape that was worth saving, but I agree wither others - I wish they had put up something better, more "sea-faring" perhaps? Maybe a riff on Cape Cod "salt box" style?

Can't you see cloths drying on the railings, fishermen's nets hanging from the arial junkyards.

Why go to Rio? Club Med can open a tourist destination right here (listening Terry?)

The politicians wanted diversity. They got it.

Of course, none of them need see this. Their vacation hidaways are safely tucked away in communities with building restrictions and good zoning.

yeah - totally intelligent place to build anything. Leave the barrier beaches to the birds. First hurricane to hit NYC, and we'll be out rescuing them, and they'll be screaming for a rebuild just like the folks on Fire Island and New Orleans

These buildings look fine and they replaced horrible, desolate vacant lots. What did you expect them to build in a run-down area, Renaissance-style mansions? We should be happy that this area is being developed and is improving. I think they look better than the 1940s and 50s boring flat brick rowhouses that are in many areas of Queens. The bitterness on this blog is unreal.

Those metal stairs and that elongated balcony make it look like an elevated subway platform.

Also, note the thoughtful stairways to the balcony.

Are they the builder's notion of "Handicapped Access"? The handicapped being the drugged out burglars who are too stupid to learn the proper break-in techniques?

crime in the rockaways is pretty bad, now that you mention it.

are those the the front steps or is it the fire escape?

wonder if anyone showed up for the open house?

There once was a man from far Rockaway.....
who could smell a whore a block away.

One day he did sniff and contracted the "Syph".....
and now his nose shall rot away!
