Uninspected poultry sold in supermarkets
From the NY Times:
A Queens slaughterhouse that had been selling thousands of pounds of uninspected poultry to local supermarkets has been enjoined from the practice by a court-approved decree announced Tuesday by federal prosecutors.
Inspectors from the Department of Agriculture discovered that the slaughterhouse, 44th Avenue Halal Poultry Corporation in Corona, which operates under an exemption to federal inspection laws that allows for the sale of uninspected poultry to individuals for at-home consumption, had been selling mass quantities of poultry directly to retailers.
The government filed suit against the company and its president, Hakim Abdul Mazumder, in April.
If Mr. Mazumder violates the decree, he will be subject to a series of escalating fines and the termination of the company’s exemption from the Poultry Products Inspection Act, the federal law that governs the inspections.
I'd totally buy a chicken from there. NOT.

Welcome to the newest 3rd world country - Queens.
The south Bronx was the 1st 3rd world borough of NYC.
Anyone wanna play "chicken" with me?
Ugh....foul poultry!
"which operates under an exemption to federal inspection laws that allows for the sale of uninspected poultry "
Wonderful.
I only eat meats that are non-kosher and non-halal.
I even eat bacon with my apples in the monrning.
Why was he granted an exemption to federal inspection laws? This opens the door to under the table deals and God knows what else. What about the health of the people who eat this poultry? These federal laws cannot and should not be relaxed. I smell FOWL play here.
Don't all the towlies always say how much better and cleaner Halal meat is??? Same for the jews and kosher meats.
Meanwhile, almost every arab or jewish deli in the city gets B and C grades from the city.
CLOSE THEM DOWN!!!!!
Let the masses eat what they want and suffer for it!!!
Historical footnote: Schechter Poultry Corp., a Brooklyn slaughterhouse almost derailed the whole New Deal in 1935 declaring the National Industrial Recovery Act unconstitutional. This decision favoring Schechter was later overturned, and Congress got to regulate all businesses in 1937.
70-32 Queens Blvd in Elmhurst is the lot next to the Entenmanns store outlet, what are they going to build over there? another motel?
What do you expect? This is Queens. A land where anything goes and our officials look the other way!
A halal super center... What else?
Officials are PAID OFF to look the other way.
Congressman Ackerman has been the payola king for decades.
I misread the headline as "'Unexpected' poultry sold in supermarkets" . . .
That place has been a blight on the face of the earth since it first opened years ago.
It's nice that it's drawing attention in November.
I guess nobody could handle visiting in August.
Nowhere in that article did it say anyone got sick from the poultry, only that he violated the rules.
I haven't been to this place so I can't attest to its practices or cleanliness, but that would be the most important thing in this story.
After all, Joel Salatin, farmer extraordinaire and king of "beyond organic" meats for many years used the buy-directly-from-the-farm exemption, too, and I would TOTALLY buy from his Polyface Farm any time.
USDA inspected meats make people sick, too, people. The important thing is to know and trust your farmer and processor!
